Gramm also denied charges made by Doggett that he (Gramm) at cepted contributions from specialiit terest groups. Gramm told reporters that Doj gett has received more than 3250,000 in contributions from East ern labor unions and some $74,01 from a Boston organization called the Council for a Liveable World. “These big-spending special inlet est groups are currently investing hundreds of thousands of dollarsin the Mondale-Doggett ticket in Texas,” Gramm said during his West Texas campaign tour. Gramm, a former Texas A&M economics instructor, is also stM uled to visit Abilene, Amarilo, Borger, Dumas and Pampa. “It’s an absurdity,” Grammsaidin response to Doggett’s statements that he accepted contributions from nuclear power interest groups, (Swisher and Deaf Smith counties are the Texas Panhandle sites under consideration for a national nuclear waste dump). Gramm said his campaign recoids show that less than one-eighth of I percent of his contributions came f rom public utility employees. He added that it is illegal to accept con- tributions from corporations. "I believe Texans want a U.S.sen ator who is committed to the well-be ing of those who do the work, pay the taxes and pull the wagon,’ Gramm said. “My opponent... is al ready neck-deep in debt to the spe cial interest groups.” Gramm said Texas congressmen traditionally favor a strong, national defense. “He (Doggett) isopposedto the B—1 bomber and the M—Xntis- sile — weapons that we need fora strong secure defense and weapons that are produced in Texas.” Gramm added that Doggett sup ports the Gay Rights Bill, and that Texas gay and lesbian groups halt launched a Doggett campaign drive to raise $700,001). “Doggett is the first U..S. Senate nominee from either party inlet as...who has actively solicited die support, endorsement and financial backing of homosexual activists,' Gramm said.
