Lewis endorsed Proposition 2 at a press conference Tuesday, saying the pro posal would ensure that the future of Texas A&M “can be even greater than our present and our past.” Proposition 2, a proposed amend ment to the Texas Constitution, would “protect A&M’s funding by setting up a realistic, sensible way to fund our other public colleges and universities,” Lewis said. On November 6, the ballot will read: “The constitutional amend ment to create from general revenue a special Higher Education Fund for construction and related activities, to restructure the Permanent Univer sity Fund and to increase the num ber of institutions eligible to benefit from the Permanent University Fund.” The PUF is an endowment de rived from land and mineral leases that historically has benefited the Texas A&M and the University of Texas systems, enabling these two universities to excel. A&M receives one-third of the fund and UT re- cieves two-thirds. Proposition 2 would set up “an en dowment to support all the 23 state schools outside the Texas A&M and UT systems. These schools presently do not have a guaranteed source of funding,” Lewis said. In addition, the proposition would provide funds for all schools in the A&M and UT systems. Prairie View A&M would receive $60 mil lion over the next 10 years from UT’s two-thirds percentage. The adoption of the amendment is very important to the future of A&M, Lewis said. If the proposition is not approved, “it would put our planned growth behind the eight ball,” he said. Proposition 2 is supported by Governor Mark White, University President Frank E. Vandiver, the Texas A&M Board of Regents and their UT counterparts. Lewis thinks the proposal has a good chance of State Rep. Neeley C. Lewis passing and does not expect anyoj> position except possibly in the tec! nical aspects. the 4™ annual ^ fl featuring the busboys also appearing from A ^Holtyrtood I I t f L I / >%/[empms Dealers * fricky September 21 Drazos eo. pavilion proceeds to the Village of hope
