This semester the shuttle bus system faced congested traffic conditions as well as a lack of qualified drivers. It was necessary to revise the shuttle bus schedule for more efficient serv ice, Lake said, but it still takes time. Lake said changes were necessary for Southwest Parkway, Munson Avenue, Anderson Street, Lincoln Avenue and Villa Maria Road routes this fall. The route changes eliminated ex cessive costs and time consumption. Lake said. By altering routes and avoiding the congested traffic on Texas Avenue and Harvey Road, the bus operations office is trying to ensure better safety. Another problem the bus opera tions office faced is the lack of qual- ri l/f Majority of Aggie students conservative, Republican By JERRY OSLIN Reporter The vast majority of students at Texas A&M are politically conserva tive! and show it by voting Republi can, says Dr. Richard Stadelmann, former election accuracy chairman for the Republican Party in Brazos County. In the last 18 years the lowest ratio of students in precinct 20 voting Re publican has been 3 to 1 and the highest has been about 7 to 1, Stadel mann said. Precinct 20 is the part of Texas A&M bound by Texas Avenue, Uni versity Drive, Wellborn Road and Jersey Street but excludes the dorms on the northwest side of campus. The conservative votes of students has made the difference in a number of local elections, Stadelmann said. According to Brazos County clerk Frank Boriskie, off-campus students also are largely conservative. Sheriff Joe Goodson identified the couple as Ana Gomez, 20, and Roberto Cortez, 23. i Goodson said authorities were questioning the couple through an interpreter to determine if the baby, which appeared to be 5 or 6 months old, is their own or might have been kidnapped. Authorities were called Wednes day night after a woman said she was approached in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart store by a couple who of fered to sell the baby for $50. Washington County authorities arrested the couple about 30 min utes later. Goodson said the car they were driving had been stolen earlier in Austin. They also face charges of car theft. The baby, which appeared to be in good health, was turned over to the Texas Department of Human Resources. Goodson said the couple told offi cers they were f rom Mexico, but had lived and worked in Austin and Houston. Douglas said 30 percent of the drivers expected this fall did not re port for work. A total of 200 em ployees is expected after training more drivers this week, he said. “We have the buses, we can pro vide the service, but not overnight,” Williams said. While some students have legiti mate complaints about changes in the shuttle bus system, Lake said he still would match the Texas A&M shuttle bus service against any other college system in the United States. have many apartment complexes are going to have a high Republican turnout because of the students that live in those apartments, Boriskie said. “We don’t participate in any kind of ‘blanket’ registration of students because we know the majority of stu dents are conservative,” Young Democrats president Gary Young said.
