These facts show a need to edu cate students about responsible drinking, Jan Winniford, Depart ment of Student Af fairs assistant di rector, said. The Department of Student Af fairs tries to teach students what re sponsible drinking is through an al cohol awareness program. “We don’t try to tell students not to drink,” Winniford said. .“If they are drinking irresponsibly, we talk to them and try to make them aware of their behavior.” For the last two years, alcohol awareness programs have been held at Fish Camps. “We talk about making responsi ble lifestyle decisions and help stu dents recognize that peer pressure will be a force at school,” Winniford said. If a student is convicted of DW1 or Public Intoxication on campus, part of the disciplinary action re quires attendance at an alcohol workshop, Winniford said. Winniford also said students should be more educated about alco holism. “There are many misconceptions about alcoholism,” Eugene Delani, a ^/hispeka 'HIW .. 3T &ET -OA/PEK. But, this isn’t true." In a special film shown at Green- leaf Hospital, Dr. David L. Ohlms, of the Hyland Center in St. Louis, Mo., discusses the disease aspect of alco holism. In 1956 the American Medical As sociation officially recognized alco holism as a disease, Ohlms said. “Alcoholism is a primary disease,” Ohlms said. “It causes its own symp toms. It is not a symptom of another disease.” Ohlms defines alcoholism as “a chronic, progressive, incurable dis ease characterized by the loss of con trol over alcohol or other sedatives.” However, loss of control doesn't mean losing control every time, Ohlms said. “It means that once they take that first drink they cannot predict whether it will be a normal drinking experience or not," he said.
