It looks like the kind of day everyone should be home in bed. ^ “It’s not a really good day for a hsirbeque, like I had planned today. The streets are dead, like an early Sunday morning.” At Galveston’s Hotel Galvez a spokeswoman said the rain and wind had a relatively small effect on the number of guests. “We have done very well over the weekend, considering the weather,” said Holly Cupp, a hotel supervisor. I “We were booked to capacity Satur- f mAj day night and were almost full Fri- day night. Sunday was really the C0 ‘ iwi' onl y day we suffered. ■ “It’s been raining all weekend, but some of our guests still went to the 1 . A beach. The seven-member committee four weeks ago told fdir President Peter Spurney to slash weekly ex penditures almost in half to some $2.1 million. Spurney cut entertainment, laid off employees, implemented a charge to ride the previously free monorail and asked leaseholders to accept late rent payments. Weekly expenses, however, con tinue to run more than $500,000 above the budget set by the commit tee. “If we get to budget Nov. 1, it won’t do any good,” committee member Jim Landis told Spurney at the group’s meeting last week. “We’ve got to do it now. These aren’t goals, they are authorized expendi tures.” Landis said he would refuse to sign checks that exceed the weekly budget. * Lee Randall, chief financial advi sor to the fair, blamed some of the fair’s troubles on a $350,000 pay- ONLY 4 APTS LEFT Large 2 BR 1V2 Ba Studio Court Yard APTS 600 University Oaks College Station, TX. 693-2772 SARAH WATTS, PIANIST, TEACHER, & RECITALIST DEGREE, PIANO— BAYLOR UNIVERSITY 2 YEARS’ UNIVERSITY TEACHING EXPERIENCE BRYAN STUDIO OVER 20 YEARS *1 OFF ADULT TICKET 1ST SHOW SAT. H pools, so many people stayed around the hotel. “We had a few cancellations for Saturday and Saturday night and Sunday, but had quite a few walk-ins, in spite of it all.” In land-locked areas, Sunday’s rains did not appear to discourage Texans from many lakes and amuse ment parks on Monday. “We were expecting about 7,000 people for the holiday,” said Bruce Neal, spokesman for Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington. “But that num ber was eclipsed by noon Monday. The weather hasn’t really had any effect on our business. We had a ca pacity crowd Sunday night, despite the heavy rain.” Officials at the largest lake in the Panhandle reported brisk business. “It’s calm and almost usable,” said Sgt. Bob Smith of the Hutchinson County Sheriffs office. “It rained all day Sunday, but this looks like an or dinary holiday. It’s sunny and warm.” One exception was Lake Grape vine in north Texas, where a spokes man for the U.S. Army Corps of En gineers said crowds were only about half the size of last year’s throngs. He suggested that the death ear lier this summer of a 3-year old Ir ving boy may have accounted for the low turnout. The boy died of a rare brain disease medical authorities say he contracted while swimming in Lake Grapevine’s depleted, stagnant water. The escrow money must total some $2 million by Sept. 20 to pay sales taxes on bulk sales of fair tick ets sold before opening day. The expo has not paid the taxes, claiming they were not due until Aug. 31, the deadline for return of the bulk-rate tickets. “That $350,000 in taxes distorts the weekly budget average,” Randall said. “Take it off and the fair only exceeds its weekly budget by $100,000. The accountant said another fac tor to balloon fair weekly expenses are catchup payments, such as the expo’s utility bill which was several months overdue. Other deferred bills — such as for telephones — are haunting the com mittee, which was formed July 12 when state officials discovered the fair was not paying debts. pa; nearly in half in the last six weeks, dwindling to $254,000 this week. “We’re fast reaching the point where only the hard core employees are left, the ones we just have to have out there,” Randall said. “We just do what we can and anything that even begins to look optional, we don’t pay.” Refrigerator for sale.
