Grand jury looks into soft drinks United Press International DALLAS — Allegations of anti trust violations and price fixing by soft drink giants Dr Pepper and Coca-Cola are being addressed by a federal grand jury in Baltimore. Mark Sheehan, a Justice Depart ment spokesman, would not name the targets of the investigation, which he said has been under way for nine months to a year. “There is a federal anti-trust grand jury,” he said. “It is looking at possible price fixing among soft drink companies.’ But officials of both Dr Pepper, which is headquartered in Dallas, and Atlanta-based Coca-Cola ac knowledged they were aware of the grand jury inquiry. “We are aware of it (investiga tion),” said Joe K. Hughes, Dr Pep per president and chief executive. “They have talked to people in our brand management group. I would say a half dozen maybe, that we know about.” “The only thing we can say at this point is that we certainly believe nei ther Coca-Cola nor any of its rep resentatives has done anything ille gal,” said Coca-Cola spokesman Carlton Curtis. “We can’t comment on any matter that is before the grand jury.” Grand jury hearings are generally kept secret until indictments are re turned, but the panel in Baltimore is reportedly checking into the activ ities of William Schermerhorn, a Dr Pepper vice president who went to work for Coca-Cola last May. Schermerhorn worked in market ing for Dr Pepper and is currently Coca-Cola USA’s senior vice presi dent of marketing. World Population Conference on its final day Tuesday considered whether a controversial resolution condemning the Israeli settlement policy should he included in a final statement. The overwhelming passage of the clause by the main committee was strongly opposed by the U.S. dele gation to the nine-day population meeting, hut only Israel joined the United States in voting against it during a marathon session that con sidered 91 resolutions. U.S. delegation member Alan Keyes said after the vote that the U.S. delegation “will raise the same issues in the plenary for the same reason we raised them here,” adding he hoped that “reasonable people” would prevail. The morning plenary session unanimously approved a document - known as the Mexican Declaration, to be added to the World Population Action Plan, which will guide future population policy. The session adjourned until the afternoon, when it was expected to debate a controversial clause con demning Jewish settlement in the Is raeli-occupied territories. The main committee passed the clause Mon day. T he measure, backed by Arab na tions, stated “the establishment of settlements in territories by force is illegal and condemned by the inter national community,” an implicit reference to Israeli settlements on land seized from Arab countries in the 1967 war. Its passage was a slap to both U.N. Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar, who tried to tone down the wording with a compromise clause, and the U.S. government. Keyes said the United States ob jected to the introduction of “extra neons, divisive issues” in a meeting on population where the represent lives were “not competent" to decide on complicated legal matters such as the interpretation of a Geneva con vention clause on occupied territo- Of the representatives from 149 countries at the conference, 1W voted in the stormy main committee session: 88 in favor of the condem nation, the United States and Israel voted against it, and 15 countries abstained. Third World countries and some! European nations, including France, f voted for the amendment, whileJa-j pan. Great Britain and Switzerland were among those abstaining.
