College Station, Texas 77840179t 10 Page 67016 BattalionATuesday, August 7, 1984 C Toxics thrown in Gulf United Press International GALVESTON — Workers wear ing protective clothing and breath ing gear tossed thousands of bottles of a toxic chemical into the Gulf of Mexico Monday rather than risk a second fatal explosion of the chemi cal in a populated area. The chemical, aluminum phos phide, exploded July 27 and killed one dockworker as crews were un loading huge containers of the sub stance from an Argentine freighter docked at the Port of Houston. The chemical is highly volatile and emits toxic fumes upon contact with water. Some of the remaining 7,000 3- pound flasks of the chemical aboard the ship continued to leak, posing a hazard to the Houston Ship Chan nel, and the Coast Guard won per mission from the Environmental Protection Agency to dump the re maining chemical in the gulf. Roger Meacham, spoKesman for the EPA regional office in Dallas, said crews began dumping 7,000 flasks of the chemical at an old haz ardous dump site in the Gulf of Mexico 110 miles southeast of Gal veston. Workers, wearing special clothing and breathing apparatus to protect themselves from any toxic fumes emitted by the chemical, were toss ing flasks of aluminum phosphide into the water one at a time and monitoring them until they sank. The dumping was temporarily halted Sunday when some of the canisters being dumped floated to the surface and began to leak a small amount of gas, said Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Stewart Alexan der. He said no one was injured, but the ship left the dumping area for a short while until the fumes dissi pated. By Monday, Meacham said the crews were puncturing each cannis- ter to make sure they sink. “They are unscrewing, or remov ing the caps on the cannisters, dumping the pellets on the water and then puncturing each cannister so that it will take on water and sink rapidly,” Meacham said.
