Ni per deci ofindus United Press International EMPORIA, Kan. — A jury Wednesday found a Lutheran min ister guilty of soliciting the murder of his former church secretary’s hus band in a plot prosecutors said was motivated by love and greed. The Rev. Thomas Bird, who claimed he was innocent of both criminal solicitation and having an affair with his secretary, looked down when the guilty verdict was read but otherwise showed no emo tion. He refused to comment as he left the court room. The jury announced its verdict at 10:50 a.m., closing eight hours of deliberations that began Tuesday af ternoon. Bird, 33, was accused of plotting in May 1983 with his former secre tary, Lorna Anderson, and another Emporia man to kill her husband, Martin. Anderson died of three gun shot wounds to the head in Novem ber 1983 along a dark Geary County road he and his wife had stopped on after she complained of being ill. Authorities allege his death stemmed from a separate plot car ried out by Mrs. Anderson and at least two other men. Jurors were escorted from the court house by sheriffs officers after telling Lyon County District Judge Gary Rulon they voted as a group not to comment to news reporters and others concerning their deliber ations. Rulon said Bird, pastor of Empo ria’s Faith Lutheran Church until re signing June 1, would be sentenced at 9 a.m. Aug. 30. Criminal solicita tion is a class D felony carrying a I minimum prison sentence of»? years and maximum of 10 years. Alan Rees, Faith Lutheran’syM minister, said the church needs tot on now that the jury has returneo' | verdict. “We need to start actini Christians again instead of alt fighting that has been going on," said. “I think the sooner we gel t behind us, the better off we will tt Rees said. Family members of Bird’s k wife, Sandra, were in the courtra when the verdict was read. MrsJi died in a one-car accident in 1983 and family members in Li Rock, Ark., have hired an attoi to investigate her death, which ft curred in the same manner as g rosecudon’s chief witness testil ird discussed killing Anderson.
