United Press International
LAS VEGAS, N.M. — About
75 cattle and several horses
were found dead from lack of
food and water at a northeast
ern New Mexico ranch owned
by a Texas man, authorities said
Sunday.
District Attorney Arthur
Bustos said his office was inves
tigating the possibility of filing
misdemeanor charges of cruelty
to animals in the case.
The ranch owned by Daniel
Simpson of West Texas appar
ently had been abandoned for
at least a month, Bustos said.
He said a man hired by Simp
son to work at the ranch appar
ently left some time ago, and no
replacement was hired.
“Some (of the animals)
couldn’t even get up to get a
drink of water,” Bustos said.

KATY — A principal in the
Lone Star Stale won't gel cheers
from coaches for his report in
the Bulletin of the National As

Principals.
Roy Mendez urges fellow
principals to blow r the whisde on
big bucks spent for high school
athletics. The administrative
principal from James E. Taylor
High m Katy wants proms sized
down, too.
“Long gone are the days
when the gym was decorated
and the cost was minimal," he
said. “Today, fund-raising
events take place from the ninth
through the twelfth grades so
that the gala evening can take
place at a cost of $5,000 to
$20,000.
“Did we intend for an extra
curricular event of this magni
tude to take place, or did we
want , as our primary purpose,
to foster group cohesion among
students? Where should the line
be drawn?”
Mendez also suggests fellow
principals consider ending ab
sences from class for meetings
about extracurricular activities
— even for checking in with the
class ring salesman. The ex
cuses eat into instructional time.
The report, “Extracurricular
Activities in Today’s Schools —
Have We Gone Too Far?”, sug
gests that people who run the
schools have lost sight of the
true purpose — instruction.
