Throw in “Knots Landing and “Falcon Crest” and TV can be, and recently has been, accused of presenting a cockeyed version of American homelife. The four highly rated soap op eras involve the high and the mighty rich men who build em pires and women who change sex partners as often as they do their Dior gowns. If TV has its way, history will record us as a nation of Sybarites. Is there room on TV — or an audience — for a family show de picting a semblance of 1980s American home life as it exists in fact? Yes, says Carroll Newman, pro ducer of the ABC series “Two Marriages. ” No, say viewers who refuse to watch it. The show was 69th of 72 shows rated by Nielsen in March. Miss Newman is an authority on family shows. She was a pro duction assistant on “The Wal tons,” associate producer of “Fa mily” and producer of “Family Tree.” “Two Marriages,” an hour-long drama that premiered last sum mer with four episodes, returned in March with the first of six new segments. It is the continuing story of a doctor, his wife and children and their friends, a farmer and his family. While their lifestyles and eco nomic stations are dissimilar, the families enjoy close ties of friendship. 14 At Ease, April 27 “‘Dallas’ and ‘Dynasty’ are fluff and fantasy,” Newman said. “They involve characters in a world that no one lives in. Tm not putting them down. I think they’re fun. I watch them. “But our show deals with the reality of every day people and their relationships,” Newman said. “I think there’s a place for that kind of entertainment on TV. “‘Da//as’ and ‘Dynasty’ are fluff and fantasy. They involve characters in a world that noone lives in. I’m not putting them down. I think they’re fun. I watch them. ” “The real drama of life involves reality. We have 10 major charac ters, giving every viewer the op portunity to identify with some one in the cast. The age span is from 7 to 65, and there’s a new baby on the way. “‘The Waltons’ and Family’ did very well. The trouble is that rea listic family shows don’t generate the publicity that makes for hit shows. The very normalacy of our characters and stories prevent them from being exploited. “For instance, when we were doing ‘Family,’ there was no way any major magazine would put Sada Thompson on the cover. But Linda Evans, Joan Collins and Linda Gray are prime targets for magazines.” ‘Two Marriages” lacks star power. Its cast is headed by Janet Eilber, Michael Murphy, Tom Mason and Karen Carlson, none of whom are household names. Newman said the absence of overt sex, violence and sugges tions of nudity also hurt the rat ings of family shows. “There are overtones of sex, but it’s not lascivious or sex for sex’s sake, she said. The lavish wardrobes of the casts of the popular nighttime soap operas and the sumptuous sets are also missing from “Two Marriages. “Our sets are not bigger than life and our cast wears clothes you can find in most American fami lies ” Newman said. “Our audienee is there. I’m confident of that. But our ratings arc rotten. Maybe it has to do with our opposition. We’re up against‘Magnum, P.I., Gimme a Break’ and ‘Family Ties. But they’re moving us against ‘Simon and Simon. Newman said most of her show’s episodes gravitate to the female characters, as wives and mothers are the central figures in most American homes. “Families remain the central social structure for caring peo- pj e ” she said. “Our characters stand up for each other and they express themselves. We make a point of having them behave as realistically as possible. “We hope viewers will be en tertained, but we hope, too, they will leam something new about themselves and their families and that they will be able to commu nicate better as they go forward in their lives.” Crossword Comer By DANIEL M.
