In testimony at a joint hear ing by two Small Business sub committees, representatives of the National Association of Truck Stop Operators said the group is not anti-merger but be lieves each merger should be closely examined. He said the group is partic ularly concerned about the pro posed Federal Trade Commis sion’s consent order in the Texaco-Getty merger. It re- ? |uires divestiture of Getty’s re ining and marketing assets in 15 states to ensure the merger is not anticompetitive. The group said as many as 12,000 people could be thrown out of work if no one else buys the Skelly-Getty assets. Ziegler said the result may lessen competition if the cur rent source of supply for over 200 truck stops is eliminated, along with Getty’s marketing orientation and incentives for truck stop franchisees. “Unfortunately the FTC’s or der reflects no realistic analysis of these possible changes in competitive structure or an as sessment whether such changes would be permissible,” he said. The 15-state region includes Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Mich igan, Missouti, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Da kota, Texas, Wisconsin and Wyoming. Ted Harder, president of Sa- lina Truck Pla/a Inc. in Salina, Kan., said many owners are concerned about losing Getty’s strong credit card program and its effective advertising cam paign. He said he has spoken with other Getty customers in Kansas and all fear the divesti ture will result in less competi tion. “In the past seveeral years, marketing pullouts by Sinclair, Vickers, Cnamplin, Gulf and Mobil — coupled with the] vious withdrawal by fejl have significantly reduce^ petition,” he said. John Hahn, executivej tor of the Missouri Oil Jo) Assocation, called the dJ ture “totaly unjustified”as| aco already has withdrawn^ much of the area and will ing Getty will hurt dies station owners. “The government she courage Texaco to honor! Getty contracts — not give! an excuse to cancel theiu'l said. “As it now stands, it islilil rabbit saying to the fox, Hi ever you do, don’t thrown that briar patch.’ Texaco! not seem at all unhappyi| the FTC order,” he said.‘i Getty people are definitely happy about it.’’ Union officials attack bi to revive ‘bracero’ plan TYPING Reports, dissertations, term pap ers, resumes.
