Last season, Campbell re peatedly grumbled about his lack of playing time for the Oil ers and said he wanted to be traded. Earlier this year, he met with officials of the San Antonio Gunslingers in the rival United Stales Football League to dis cuss the possibilities of playing there. But in a meeting last Friday, Campbell said he and Oilers General Manager Ladd Herzeg resolved their differences and the former NFL rushing cham pion said he now plans to finish his career in Houston. “I found a different Ladd Herzeg on Friday. He was more willing to sit and listen to me and I was more willing to sit and listen to him,” Campbell said Sunday after taking his physical for the mini-camp. Perez, 26, was released from the San Luis prison after Pros ector General Miguel Garcia Cordero decided not to appeal his conviction on a reduced charge of cocaine possesion. The lanky righthander said he would return to Atlanta either Wednesday or Thursday. “I’m confident I’m going to win 20 games this season de spite being so many days late,” said Perez, who was cheered by a crowd of fans on leaving the prosecutor’s office. “Being out in the street again makes me feel like a new man and confident I will never again be in trouble with the law.” While Perez said he was re ady to pilch immediately, Braves General Manager John Mullen said in Atlanta the team must lake Perez to New York to meet with Kuhn as soon as he arrives in Atlanta. Kuhn’s office has been investigating the Perez case and he could face discipli nary action. “The only thing we can say at this point, with the case being where it is now, (is that) we will now intensify our investiga tion,” said a spokesman for the Commissioner’s office. The spokesman said he could not confirm that Perez will be flying to New York. “We don’t know what view the commissioner will take ... but Pascual is free now, and sooner or later he’ll be pitching for the Braves,” said Mullen. “I am happy and in perfect condition to begin playi soon as I arrive in / Perez. “I was about 121 overweight when I prison, hut now I’m aim my pitching weight.” Perez, who was 15-8 \ Braves last season, had I jail for three months sinct arrest Jan. 9 when he; friend were stopped I ics agents on leaving a! tavern. The Islanders will also have the home ice advantage. Perhaps most important, the Rangers will be without Barry Beck, their captain and star de fenseman. Beck suffered a sep arated shoulder in the Rangers’ 4-1 loss to the Islanders Sunday and will likely be out the rest of the season. “Obviously, we will miss him,” Rangers’ coach Herb Brooks said of Beck. “But we can’t say, ‘We’ve lost him and now we’re not going to show up.’” Islander goaltender Billy Smith noted, “You don’t like to see anybody get hurt. But if someone is going to get hurt, missing Beck hurts them the most.” In the other division semifi nal game Tuesday, Chicago meets the North Stars at Minne sota. In the division finals be ginning Thursday, Quebec and Montreal meet in Quebec, and Calgary confronts the Oilers in Edmonton.
