Charles Reid, marketing di rector for Dabney-Byrn Asso ciates InC., said Tuesday that drilling will begin today at each corner of the 250-year-old Alamo, whose defenders were killed by Mexican troops in 1836. Four 30-foot-deep holes will be drilled and instruments will be inserted in each hole to mea sure the flow of underground water beneath the Alamo, he said. It is known that sub-sur face water exists beneath the building, but Reid said the in struments will determine just how much water is there. no immediate danger of crum bling. “Those walls are 3 feet thick, so we’re talking about only a fraction of surface coming off,” he said. Further tests will be made on cores drilled from the walls themselves, and temperature and humidity readings will be monitored regularly. Reid insists the Alamo is in The Alamo Committee of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, which manages the Alamo, hired the San Antonio engineering firm to conduct the tests. After testing ends in six months to a year, engineers will be able to recommend a course of action to the DTR, Reid said. .M S C.
