Buenoano, 40, a mother of three from Gulf Breeze, is to be sentenced at 10 asm. EST by Circuit Judge George Lowrey. A 12-member jury in the Florida Panhandle town found Buenoano guilty Saturday of murdering her son Michael Goodyear, 19, by taking him on a canoe trip in May 1980 and dumping him overboard wear ing metal leg braces and no life jacket. Hours before, while the jury was deliberating her fate, she and her other son, James Good year, 18, were arrested on charges of attempted murder and insurance fraud for alleg edly planting a bomb last sum mer in a car owned by her Fi ance, James Gentry, in Pensacola, Fla. A spokesman for the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms in Pensacola said evidence indicated Buenoano and James concocted a scheme to kill Gentry and collect $530,000 in life insurance. With a life term under state law, she would not be eligible for parole until she served 25 years. Lava inching to Hilo HILO, Hawaii — Mauna Loa volcano was rocked by methane explosions that sent up mush room clouds Sunday from a 16- mile-long flow of lava steaming through a forest to within 5 miles of homes outside Hilo, au thorities said. The natural methane explo sions were triggered by the heat of the lava flow and prompted worried residents to call Civil Defense officials and ask whether the front of the flow was being bombed in an effort to divert the lava flow. Authorities said the flow was pushing from a vent on the northeast flank of Mauna Loa toward coastal Hilo, second largest city in Hawaii. The volume of lava was down about 25 percenl compared with earlier output, officials said. It was averaging 900,000 cubic yards per hour, occasion ally dropping to 650,000 cubic yards. The half-mile-wide, 30 to 50- feet high leading edge of the flow was within 5 miles of the nearest homes on the outskirts of Hilo, a city of 32,000, and 13 miles from the city itself, offi cials said. Mauna Loa, the world’s larg est active volcano at 13,680 feet, began erupting March 25 after a nine-year respite. Its last ma jor eruption was 34 years ago. Kilauea, a 4,000-foot volcano on Mauna Loa’s eastern flank, erupted forcefully for 22 hours Friday, in the first simultaneous eruption of (he two volcanoes in ,1 16 years.
