Main Bryan 823-0545 Mount St. Helens erupts, dusts towns in Oregon United Press International VANCOUVER, Wash. — Mount St. Helens erupted Thursday, releasing an ash plume rising to about 23,000 feet which dusted communities in Oregon 45 miles away. The eruption sent super heated rocks cascading down the side of its lava dome as the mountain rocked with earth quakes. Ash was reported about 45 miles south and southeast of the volcano in areas east of Port land, Ore., U.S. Geological Sur vey spokesman Steve Brantley said. Scientists who initially an nounced that lava was oozing to the surface of the 80-story-high dome were not able to see a new lava lobe when they entered the crater. Age Dy TRA\ Spoi Deficit reaches a record United Press International WASHINGTON — The economy is growing at a slower rate, housing sales are still strong and the trade deficit hit a record $10.1 billion in Feb ruary, the government re ported Thursday. The three reports taken to gether should ease fears that the economy is overheating with rising inflation, officials said. Although the economy has been growing at a strong 7.2 percent annual rate. Commerce Department economist Robert Ortner said, “This trade deficit figure takes some of the wind out of the sails.” But Ortner said that, con trary to normal economic pat terns, the slowdown may not be accompanied by a decline in in terest rates. “I think the prospects are that interest rates are going to remain high,” he said.
