THE UNDERGROUND Sbisa Basement Glazed Donut Special Monday 3/19/84 — Thursday 3/22/84 $1.49 per dozen OFFER GOOD TO THE LAST DONUT “The Best Food. The Lowest Price.” Aggies eat Gopher stew By TRAVIS TINGLE Sports Writer If the Minnesota Golden Go phers ever schedule the Texas A&M baseball team again, it’ll be surprising. The Aggies made Minnesota’s trip to Texas an ab solute nightmare by once again sweeping both games of Wednesday’s doubleheader. The Aggies were victorious in the first game 1-0 with junior Phillip Taylor going the dis tance on the mound. With two outs in the bottom of the second inning, Pat James walked and Shawn Ghoruby was sent in to pinch run at first base. Shortstop Rob Swain then singled to right field to put run ners at the corners for the Ag gies. Senior Kevin Smith then hit the game winning RBI into right field, bringing Ghoruby in to score. Bryan Hickerson, although he gave up only four hits, took the loss for the Gophers and now stands at 0-2 for the year, while Taylor improved to 1-1 after giving up only two infield hits during the game. In the nightcap, the Aggies scored all their runs in the bot tom of the third inning and went on to bury the Gophers 5- 3. Freshman Jimmy Flowers went 4 2/3 innings on the mound for Coach Tom Chan dler before being relieved by Barry Smith. All three of the Gophers' runs were charged to Flowers and came in the fifth inning. In the Aggies’ half of the third inning, centerfielder Mike Scanlin singled then Tim Car twright sacrificed to send Scan lin on to second base. Swain walked, putting run ners on first and second. Then third baseman Tony Metoyer hit a ground ball to the pitcher which looked like wojuld turn into an easy double play for the Gophers. But the throw to sec ond to get Swain was too high and sailed into center field, thus loading the bases for the Ag gies. Buddy Haney then belted a double down the right field line, scoring Scanlin and Swain. James, the designated hitter, made the score 4-0 by hitting a base hit to left field Kevin Smith’s single put run ners at first and third, then Ghoruby grounded to shortstop and was called safe on a fielder’s choice. Ghoruby was credited with the RBI that scored James from third and rounded out the Aggies’ scoring. | PREPARE FOR: JUNE Educational Center TEST PREPARATION SPECIALISTS SINCE 1938 707 Texas Ave. 301-C In Dallas: 11617 N.
