Whole Earth Provision Co. 105 Boyett (College Station 8^-6-5794 LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A woman charged with killing three of her children and her boyfriend’s daughter during an eight-year period liked chil dren, the boyfriend said Wednesday. Police said the woman, Debra Sue Tuggle, had a history of mental illness. However, her boyfriend, George Paxton, said Tuggle’s doctor assured him the woman was well before he let her move in with him to help care for his three children. “I have. to live with the fact for the rest of my life that I brought a woman in my house that killed my child,” Paxton said. “My daughter was the clos est thing to me this side of life. I would have died for her.” Tuggle, 26, was held without bond Wednesday for the 1982 death of Paxton’s daughter, To- mekia Shenee Paxton, 2, and the deaths of three of her own children, 2-month-old Thomas Lee Bates and 1-year-old Wil liam Earl Henry, both of whom died in 1974, and 9-month-old Ronald Earl Johnson, who died in 1976. Police in Malvern, Ark., where Tuggle once lived, were investigating the death of her fourth child, Terran/ Andre Tuggle, who died in 1979 at the age of 2 V'i. months. The deaths were first attrib uted to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and pneumonia. Dr. Ben Saltzman, director of the Arkansas Health Department, said death by suffocation easily could be mistaken for SIDS or pneumonia in an autopsy. Police began their investiga tion in November after Pulaski County Coroner Steve Nawojc- zyk became suspicious about so many SIDS deaths in one fam ily. Police Capt. James Vandiver said State Medical Examiner Dr. Fahmy Malak re-examined the Paxton case and found evi dence the child had suffocated. “She was quiet and real likea ble — a real gentle sort,” Paxton said. “She seemed to love them (the children).” Paxton said he knew of the deaths of Tuggle’s four chil dren, and was worried about her mental state. “She had a mental break down after she lost the kids,” he said. “She tried to commit sui cide. I went over to the state mental hospital, and talked to the doctor who treated her. She was in-house for a long time, (but) they had even released her from consultation.” Paxton and Tuggle later had a child, who lives with Paxton and his two children. “I don’t hate her,” Paxton said. “I feel sorry for her.” UNISA.
