DALLAS — Former Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Roger Slaubach Monday said he was saddened by the sale of “Ameri ca’s learn” but believed the tran sition to new ownership would be smooth. “I was pretty well prepared for it,” Slaubach said at news the NFL owners association Monday night approved sale of the team for the largest price ever paid for a sports franchise — an estimated $80 million —to a consortium of 11 new owners headed by Texas oilman H.R. “Bum” Bright. Bright, the senior partner in Bright and Co., will be the gen eral partner of the club while owning 17 percent and Tex Schramm, the current general manager, will be named manag ing partner and will continue to run the club the same way he did under Clint Murchison since the team was founded in 1960. The Texas A&M Athletic De- lartment announced late Mon ty afternoon that it has ac- epted the resignation of head mmen’s basketball coach herri Rapp. Her resignation becomes el ective May 31. The March 15th iryan Eagle reported that, wording to A&M athletic ources, Rapp was on the way ut and it appears they were ight. Even though rumors around ampus placed the blame for app’s action on athletic direc- >r Jackie Sherrill, Sherrill doesn’t appear to be directly be hind Rapp’s departure, instead assistant athletic director John David Grow seems to be the force. And Crow says that the Athletic department has a plan to resolve the coaching situa tion. Crow said in a Athletic de partment press release that the Assistant athletic di rector John David Crow seems to be the force (behind Rapp’s resignation). positions of assistant athletic di rector for women and women’s basketball coach will be com bined into one job, effective Au gust 31. Kay Don, the assistant ath letic director for women, could not be reached for comment. The hiring of a new coach might be a sign of the Athletic department’s growing concern about the women’s basketball program, but Rapp believes more of a commitment is still needed. “If the athletic department will properly fund the women’s basketball program with ad equate staffing, quality publica tions, and sufficient recruiting funds, then Texas A&M can have a consistently winning bas ketball team,” Rapp said. Assistant Coach Cindy Cough said she will continue her coaching role until the new head coach arrives. “My continuing role is up to the new coach,” Cough said. “I’m not planning on staying around, but I’m not closing any doors.” “I’m still recruiting for the program, even though we don’t know who the new head coach will be and that makes it tough. We’re holding off on campus visits until a new person is hi red.” Cough says she thinks that A&M is trying to make a full committment to women’s bas ketball — at least that’s what she says Crow told her. But will that committment match what other schools have done up to now? “ In the last couple of years the program has really stag nated while other schools have been pumping money into their programs,” Cough said. “And if they aren’t going to make a full committement to women’s ath letics I don’t think they should have it at all.” She said she really wasn’t sure what direction the wom en’s basketball program was headed, but she hoped that whatever happened it would be postive for all the women in volved. Dallas will own 10 percent and his son George M. Underwood III will own 5 percent. Bright did not specify the percentages owned by the other general partners, who are L. Brad Camp of Dallas, Craig Hall of Dallas, J.L. Huffines Jr., of Dallas, Arthur Temple of Di boll, Texas, and S. Foster Yan cey Jr., of Dallas. The NFL has a provision specifying that each team must have a 51 percent owner, but the league waived the provision while approving this sale at the league meetings which began Monday. Slaubach said the sale rep resented the end of an era. “There’s sadness involved be cause of Clint,” he said. “When I signed with the team he was the owner, it was like a tradi tion. He’s been a great owner. “I’m sure it’s a sad thing in his life. It probably wouldn’t have been done other than the circumstances of his health.” Under the direction of Mur chison and Schramm, the Cow boys have had a record 18 straight winning seasons and have made the playoffs in 17 of those years.
