But ex hibition season 1984 is proving to be better than most. he winner in relief was Pat Larkin. Jerry Ujder pitched the- ninth inning to record a save. The Tigers improved their ex hibition record to 5-9. Houston fell to 8-6. The right-hander, who was has pitched five no-hitters in his career, retired the first 19 De troit Tigers Sunday. His streak ended when Alan Trammel was safe on an error in the seventh inning in the game at Lakeland, Fla. Joe Sambito relieved Ryan in the eighth, with the Astros lead ing 1-0, and was tagged with the loss in Houston’s 2-1 defeat. In other exhibition games: At Bradenton, Fla., outfielder Ruppert Jones scored the tying run in the fifth inning and later drove in an insurance run to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 6-4 deicsion over the St. Louis Cardinals. Jones, a non-roster player, was with the San Diego Padres last season before declar ing himself a free agent. Overshadowed by Ryan’s per formance was the job by Jack Morris, who pitched the first seven innings for the Tigers. Morris allowed just two hits and the lone Houston run in the first inning. At Fort Lauderdale, Fla., a quintet of Texas pitchers com bined on a seven-hitter Sunday, helping Rangers defeat the New York Yankees 5-3. It was the first loss in relief for Dave Righetti. The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the eighth when Lance Parrish greeted Sambito with a leadoff single. Parrish moved to third base when Sam bito threw wildly to first on a pickoff play. ice ‘break’ for softball team ulrome, I sclosed sb(| ?d skull, I ibs and; ure of 1 prompted; Uity, Mo., li eaths of t K2 hile the rest of the Texas M student body took off for spring break, the defending ional champion Aggie soft- team went about business as al pushing their record to aildren. When you have a spring break like the one Andaya had, it’s really hard to know what to write home about. Do you write about the New Mexico game where Andaya tos sed 1 1 strikeouts, giving up only one walk as the Ags won 2-0? Or how about the game against Baylor where Andaya tossed a no-hitter, struck out 17 and the Aggies won 8-0? Or the Oklahoma game where Andaya gave up a hit. The Aggies won that one 1-0. Or you might want to write about the championship game also played against the Sooners. For three innings Yvette Lopez held Oklahoma scoreless, but in the fourth she ran into trouble loading the bases with no outs. Enter Andaya. She promptly struck out the side, one, two, three. She them pitched nine more shut-out innings. That’s right, nine more shutout in nings. In the bottom of the 13th, with the score tied at 0, Andaya reached first on a fielders choice. Patti Holthaus’s single scored the run, and the Aggies were the tournament champs. After Kirk Gibson was hit by a pitch, Glenn Wilson tied the score with a sharp single to left. Pinch hitter Barbaro Garbey was safe on another error to load the bases. John Wockenfuss then hit a sacrifice fly for the game winning RBI. At West Palm Beach, Fla., in fielder Brad Mills broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning with a two- out, two-run single which car ried the Montreal Expos to a 4-2 triumph over the Kansas City Royals. Left-hander Chris Welsh pitched three shutout in nings to get the victory. ey Hatcher snapped a 2-2 tie with his first homer of the spring and Rick Lysander pitched out of a ninth-inning jam to lead the Minnesota Twitis to a 4-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Hatch er’s slammer was only the second homer in 12 games for the Twins this springy At Clearwater, Fla., Len Matuszek collected four hits and drove in four runs and Mike Schmidt blasted his first spring home run as the Philadelphia Phillies romped over the Chica go While Sox 8-1. Last year’s Cy Young Award winners John De nny and LaMarr Hoyt matched off against each other — with winner Denny giving up one run in six innings and Chicago’s Hoyt giving up six runs in just over four innings. At Yuma, Ariz., Paul Molitor extended his spring training hit ting streak to nine games to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-1 win over the San Diego Padres. Molitor hit a pair of singles to boost his spring average to .543. He now has 191iits in 35 at bats. A St. Petersburg, Fla., outfiel der George Bell drove in five runs with a home run, single and triple to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to an 11-inning, 6-3 win over the New York Mets. At Winter Haven, Fla., Mick- conserve it Andaya had a great spring break and she’s now 10-0. Lopez season mark is now 7-2 after vic tories over Southern Illinois, and Iowa State. The A&M softball team’s next home game is Tuesday at 4 p.m. against the University of Texas- Arlington. , who AlB d accideni over him ini Allman itf r a prentfj Tally was petent to t ruled sfi_ .. tment at ; P^. hin 8 ad enabled ^win I the chat aid in het gs sweep Kansas; WC race begins ally. htist [Texas A&M rode the relief of Barry Smith to an win to sweep a doublehead- Sunday from the Kansas diawks.
