The two-part ABC movie based on Shirley Conran's best seller, airs Sunday, Feb. 26, and Monday, Feb. 27. "I thought that Lili would be very challenging to play, be cause she seemed as if she would be a black-hearted, one dimensional character," says Cates. "It was challenging be cause I had to find the human aspects of Lili in order to get the sympathy of the audience so that they understand why she is going about finding her mother in such a bitter way, rather than just showing this girl wanting to get revenge. "Finding the human qualities of Lili was really up to me to do," she says. "As the viewer, you expect to watch this think ing, 'Oh, I doubt I'm going to be sympathic' or 'This is going to be a good 'Dynasty'-type story.' I think it comes off a lot more real than that." It was in college that one of three best friends, Judy (Bess Armstrong), Pagan (Brooke Ad ams) and Maxine (Arielle Dom- basle), bore Lili. Secretly giving the baby over to foster parents, it was agreed that no one would tell who the mother was until she was ready to come forth and claim the child. Years later, the threesome is told that little Lili has been killed. In truth, Lili has not been killed, and through a se ries of flashbacks, we see her grow up alone, prostituting herself in the streets of Paris and then rising to super-star dom, but never freeing herself of the desire to find her mother. "I sort of created the charater of Lili," Cates says, who starred in the feature films "Private Schools" and "Fast Times at Ridgemont High." "What she had to do is hard until you find out why she is doing it. So when I was able to completely relate to Lili on a real level, I found that she had human needs and that her main need, her only need at the moment, was to find her mother. She has no sense of identity at this point. She's 20, she's in the public eye, and that's her need. The way she goes about it though, is very bitter." Awards airTues. John Denver will host "The 26th Annual Grammy Awards," a three-hour live special from the Shrine Audi torium in Los Angeles, airing Tuesday, Feb. 28, on CBS. The rock group The Police and two giants of classical music, conductor Georg Solti and violinist Itzhak Perlman, follow Jackson with four Grammy nominations.
