They pounced on St. Mary’s, winning both games of a double-header Wednesday, 9-1 and 7-0. Head coach Tom Chandler was appropriately pleased with his teams start. “It was an impressive debut,” he said, “we definitely got off to a good start.” Their good start began in the first inning of the first game. Shortstop Rob Swain singled, then first basemen Buddy Ha ney hit lhe Aggies first home run of the 1984 season, albeit an inside-the-park home run. The Aggies made it 3-0 in the 2nd inning when Pat James scored on a Mike ^canlin sacri fice fly. It was 3-1 going into the 6th inning when A&M erupted for six runs. Swain doubled scored on a home run by third base- man Tony Metoyer. Outfielder Don Robinson fol lowed with a single and moved to second base on a wild pitch. James walked and then catcher Steve Johnigan doubled, scor ing both Robinson and James. With two outs, Scanlin sin gled to score Johnigan and on the attempt to throw him out at the plate, Scanlin moved to 2nd base. The play was soon re peated when Todd Edwards followed with another single and went to 2nd base on the play at the plate. The inning fi nally ended on a Haney pop out. Sherman Corbett was the winning pitcher for the Aggies. He had 11 strike outs before be ing relieved in the middle of the fifth inning. In the second game, junior college transfer Tom Arrington pitched a three-hitter with no walks and nine strike outs. Again the Aggies jumped to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning. Scanlin walked and moved to third base on a double by Tim Cartwright. Swain was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Following a Haney strikeout, Metoyer doubled which scored Scanlin and Cartwright. Swain then scored from third on a ground oput by Robinson. The Aggies added another three runs in the fourth inning. Jonigan knocked in Kevin Smith from third base with a sacrifice fly. Scanlin belted a home run to right centerfield with freshman Jimmy Flowers on base. The Aggie scoring ended in the fifth inning on a single by Shawn Choruby which scored Haney. Tony Metoyer and Mike Scanlin each finished with four RBI, Steve Johnigan had three and Bud Haney added two. But Davis connected on his free throws to make it 111-106 and Blackman added another to finish the scoring. Dallas stormed to its biggest lead of the night, 94-75, early in the forth quarter on a pair of Blackman jumpers, and en joyed a 17-point lead, 105-88, before the scoring slump began. The Mavericks led at the half, 66-54. Houston threatened early in the third period, cutting the Mavericks’ lead to five points on three occasions. United Press International FORT WORTH — Fresh man Todd Holloway hit a 10- foot jump shot with six seconds remaining in the second over time period Wednesday night to bring Texas A&M a 67-65 win over Texas Christian. The victory clinched the home-court advantage for the Aggies in the opening round of the Southwest Conference post season tournament. The game was tied after one extra period, 61-61, but twice the Horned Frogs overcame a two-point deficit — the second of those occasions coming with 30 seconds remaining when Tom Mortimer hit two free throws. Tracy Mitchell tied the game with four seconds left in regula tion, 59-59, by hitting the first of two free throws, but he missed the second try. It was the only point the Frogs scored during the final five minutes of the second half. Texas A&M also missed a chance to put the game away in regulation when Doug Crite failed on the front end of a one- and-one free throw situation with 11 seconds remaining. The Horned Frogs overcame deficits of seven and nine points in the first half, scoring 14 con secutive points at one point and assuming a 34-32 advantage at intermission. The lead changed hands nine times in the second period with A&M overcoming a four-point deficit down the stretch and taking the lead, 59-58, with 2:16 to play on a basket by Darnell Williams. But Williams missed an open layup with 45 seconds to play that would have given A&M a three-point cushion. The only points in the first overtime were on two free throws by Mitchell and a jump shot by A&M’s Kenny Brown with 1:12 to play in the extra period.
