My grades are good and I don’t need money. By the way; remember that I said I was going home with Blaine last week end? Well, I thought I would fill you in on why your Texaco bill has a charge on it with my signature from Bill’s Texaco and Curio Headquarters in Cimmaron, New Mexico. Well, its like we did go to Blaine’s house Friday — took us almost nine hours to get there — but we didn’t stay there real long. ( Blaine’s the one that lives in the Panhandle. ) There’s really not much to do in Borger and Blaine’s cabin at Angel Fire high in the mountains of New Mexico was just a few hours’ drive away. Sure enough, the mountains were there with their firmly-packed ski slopes just beckoning us to get away from the dull, average college routine. Just to clear up the matter before you pick up the phone to call me, we left Fri day after our classes were finished and got back to College Station Monday in time for morning classes. And it was a relatively inexpensive trip. bob caster We had gotten together a group of five people who were definitely inter ested in making a pilgrimage to the slopes. When the morning of departure rolled around, there were the only two of us left. We knew that you wouldn’t approve of the two of us driving so far alone and almost shelved the roadtrip. But in a moment of sheer genius I said, “Call Duke, he’ll go.” To really know my friend Duke is to appreciate his consideration for not let ting his buddies down in a pinch. By noon Friday we were on the road to the mountains. After all, it’s kind of like going to Aus tin for the weekend, just a whole lot far ther. And as long as there were three people going, there was always someone who was rested enough to take over at wheel. And gas was cheaper every time another passenger is added, so we added two more at the gas station in Chilicothe. Sure, Mom the Colorado Rockies are a little too far away for a weekend road trip but northern New Mexico offers ex cellent skiing for its proximity to Texas. Proximity. Yes Mom, I know what that means — just a short drive across the Panhandle. Fm not saying a weekend ski trip is no different than going to North Zulch for the weekend to watch the ragweed prop agate. What I am saying is that it is an excit ing and feasible alternative to an other wise dull, routine weekend in the Brazos Valley. So Mom, when my mid-term grades come in it really isn’t the trip that caused them to be so low. It’s probably the 40 hours a week I spend writing sports for The Battalion. P.S. Dad, you know what I’m talking about. It hasn’t been that long. Rollie White Col iseum. Temple, Delta State’s leading scorer, is averaging 31.75 points per game after 22 consecutive starts this season. She was joined in the double figure col umn by teammate Ida Johnson points, 21 of which were in the first half. Together the two accounted for 6/ percent of the Lady Statesmen’s total points. After hitting their first field goal of the night, the Aggies had to smuggle to stay in the game following a 5:27 dry spell where they didn’t make a single point. Meanwhile, Delta State was making enough for both teams. But the Aggies began to slowly close the gap which had widened to as much as 16 points during the first half. Even with an off perfor mance by star forward Lisa Langston, who didn’t score a point until 3:46 in the first half, the Aggies managed to come as close as nine points at one time. “Lisa couldn’t buy a basket tonight,” Aggie coach Cherri Rapp said, referring to Lan gston’s 23 percent accuracy from the field.“I guess it was be cause she played so good last week.” Langston was voted South- playe ifter ; week last week after a superb 32-point performance against Baylor. But a bright spot emerged for the Aggies with the perfor mance given by junior Ann Trinka. She came off the bench to score a career-high 12 points. Center Michell Tatum led the Aggies in scoring with 22 points and in rebounds with 16. Also for the Aggies, Jenni Edgar had 14 points and Lisa Langston had 12.
