February is Black History Month. During the month, black Americans will celebrate the achievements of famous blacks of the past as well as the present. Black students at Texas A&M are celebrating their history by honoring blacks who are the first to break into areas once dominated by whites, said De- idra Tidwell, a member of the MSC Black Awareness Commit tee. Vanessa Williams, the first black Miss America, Lt. Col. Guion S. Bluford Jr., the first black astronaut, Alex Haley, the continued from page 9 Ellington received honor ary degrees from about 15 colleges and universities. He won 77 prizes. Former Presi dent Richard Nixon awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and former Presi dent Lyndon Johnson awarded him the President's Gold Medal. He also received many awards from foreign countries. Despite these acknowl edgments, Ellington had to fight prejudice. In 1965, a Pu litzer Prize committee de cided not to give any award away in his category, rather than give him an award. He even had to fight to get a author of Roots and the first black to successfully trace his family to its African beginnings, and Harold Washington, the first black mayor of Chicago, are among the people to be honored here at Texas A&M. The Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and His tory is sponsoring Black History Month across the nation. The association is a nationwide group and a part of the black history movement. The black history observance was founded in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Famous black men and women of the past also will be honored. Dr. Ida Gray, the first black woman dentist, Mary Mc- Cleod Bethune, founder of Be- thune-Cookman college, and Harriet Ross Tubman, a leader of the Underground Railroad, membership in the American Society of Composers, Au thors and Publishers. Ellington dealt with prej udice jokingly. When the Pu litzer Prize committee refused awards in his category he said, ''Fate doesn't want me to be too famous too young." Ellington was 66 at the time. Even though he had diffi culty getting his music ac cepted as serious classical music, Ellington did not want his music classified as black music. He worked on jazz versions of Tchaikowsky's "Nutcracker Suite" and Grieg's "Peer Gynt Suite." El lington also composed music for some scenes from Shake speare's plays. are some of the women to be recognized. Booker T. Wash ington, the founder of the Na tional Black Business League, designed to help black busi nessmen, and Charles R. Drew, designer of the blood bank sys tem, are among the male honor- ees. Drew died under ironic cir cumstances when a white hospital refused to give him blood because the donors there were white. Black History Month recog nizes not only blacks who have made contributions to the past, but also those who have made a positive impact on the future.
