Page 6AThe Battalion/Friday, January 26, 1984 A&M to host driving contest By KIMBERLEE NORRIS Reporter If you’ve ever had a secret. desire to race through campus in a sports car, heedless of stop signs, other vehicles, or Univer sity Police, then the Marketing Society has a deal for you. Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Dodge Di vision of Chrysler Corporation and the Sports Car Club of America will bring the National Collegiate Driving Champion ships to Texas A&M. Jim Currie, president of the Marketing Society, which is the campus sponsor, with the Texas A&M Sports Car Club, said the event will feature a rally course on the Zachry parking lot. The course will be set off by barri cades and traffic cones. “Any Texas A&M student with a current I.D. and a valid driver’s license may compete in the event free of charge,” Currie said, “but we are asking that par ticipants give a 25 cent donation which will go to charity.” Each driver will be permitted one practice lap around the course before a final attempt at clocking the fastest time with fewest penalties, Currie said. Dodge is hosting the event on 70 college and university cam puses nationwide to introduce its new sports car, the Daytona Turbo. ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE — The helicopter car rying President Reagan from the White House to Andrews Air Force Base, Md., made an emergencg Thursday when a red warning light went on. Reagan was unhurt and never in any danger, a White House official said. Reagan was en route to Atlanta for a political appear ance when the incident occur red aboard his Marine One chopper. The helicopter land ed at Anacostia Naval Air Sta tion where the Reagan party transferred to another craft. The president was joking as he boarded the second chopper. “This one’s all right,” he said. “I kicked the tires on it.” White House Deputy Press Secretary Larry Speakes said it had not been determined whether there was a problem with the chopper, or merely a faulty warning light. Speakes briefed reporters on the incident aboard Air Force One as they returned from Atlanta. “We landed at Anacostia Naval Air Station,” Speakes said, “and the president was switched to another heli copter.” Speakes emphasized Reagan never was in danger, and called the emergency landing “standard proce dure.” Also aboard the chopper were Speakes and White House chief of staff James Baker and the pilot. A1 Peterson, Amer ican Heart Association presi dent for the Brazos County, said the money raised in College Sta tion will be used for heart re search at Texas A&M as well as community education for all age groups including young chil dren. “I hope other communities in the nation will join College tion and also declare February as ‘Heart Month,’” Peterson said.
