Han sen’s new $1.2 million home won’t be pretentious, says his wife, Nancy. In fact, she says, she hopes the home will be rustic, comfortable and not intimidat ing in any way. “We hope that it will be a warm and inviting home,” she said. Work on the residence lo cated off West Jersey Street be gan in August and should be complete in August 1984. Everyone associated with the building of the home is an aggie, from the architect, to the buil der, to the former students who provided funds for the structure and the furnishings. The chancellor’s home will be named in honor of Billie Jean and Chester J. Reed, Class of’47, who donated $1 million for the We proudly present the gift of lasting pleasure. residence. A pond located be hind the home will be named in honor of Elsie and C.E. “Pat” Olsen, Class of’23, who donated $200,000 to build the pond and provide furnishings for the home. Like any other new homeow ners the Hansens have been busy with the preparations of the home. While the home was in the planning stages, Hansen said, they not only prepared for their own needs, but they kept in mind future occupants and guests who would be using the home. Part of the chancellor’s role is to greet and entertain the pub lic, he said, and for the job to be done adequately a large resi dence is a neccesity. For entertaining purposes, the home will be equipped with a catering kitchen. The kitchen will be located in the rear of the home so it won’t interfere with the private residence. Although the home will be large, Nancy Hansen said, it will not be the million dollar home most people might expect. There is confusion where cost is concerned, she said. “The price is very misleading when you’re talking about a mil lion dollar home,” she said. “The home itself is not even going to be half of that because most of the million is going for fencing, utilities, a new bridge, road work and all of that is tak ing up an awful lot of that money.” Chancellor Hansen said another aspect that had influ ence on the style of the home was the reflection of the land-grant heritage of Texas A&M. That heritage is based heavily upon agriculture and service to the people. Hansen said he wants the house to reflect that kind of theme. Chinese dog ban keeps city health by Stephanie M. Ross and Donn Friedman Battalion Staff Dogs have l>een banned in the Chinese city of Peking, and about 200,000 dogs have been exterminated, the Asso ciated Press reported last week. But it isn’t a Chinese ver sion of Fido, Rover or Spot that’s being killed. The Chinese view dogs dif ferently than Americans do, Jun Li, a graduate ocean en gineering student told The Battalion Thursday. “Dogs are seen as some thing to eat, rather than as pets,” he said. “And rabies is a very serious problem iu China.” The ban on dogs was neces sary because health officials in the city feared a rabies out break. United Press International JACKSBORO — A judge de cided Wednesday he was not technically allowed to preside over the murder conspiracy trial of a Fort Worth woman accused of paying $500 to have her hus- Padre Cafe band killed, and he granted a mistrial. Pamela Hutto Loffland, 34, went on trial Monday on charges she conspired to have her hus band, air-conditioning execu tive John Denton Loffland, 35, murdered so she could inherit his estimated $500,000 estate. The two were finalizing their second divorce when Loffland’s body was found Dec. 14, 1982, in rural Parker County about 6 miles southwest of Weath erford. He had been shot four times in the back. State District Judge Harry H opkins, who sits in Parker County’s 43rd district court, said Wednesday it had been disco vered that when the case was moved to Jack County on a change of venue, he had not been formally assigned through the court clerk to preside. Loffland’s lawyers moved for mistrial, and Hopkins granted it. Defense attorneys then indi cated they may seek another change of venue. Hopkins said he hoped to reschedule the trial in January or February. Two men who pleaded guilty to taking part in the slaying had been expected to testify that Loffland paid the killers $500 to shoot her husband. Luckey Marshall Wright, 39, was sentenced last week to 15 years in prison for his guilty plea to murder conspiracy charges.
