Page 4/The Battalion/Thursday, November 17,1983 Two men arrested during ‘smokeout’ United Press International GAINESVILLE — Police arrested two men headed to ward Oklahoma Wednesday and paraded therti through the town square in a rqul e cart, offi cials said. The crime: smoking- The punishment: dinn er w hh the mayor of this north Texas com munity. The sham arrests and public humiliation were part of Gaines ville’s effort to kick off the seventh annual Great American Smokeout, a midnight-to- midnight exercise designed to make millions of smokers ab stain Thursday. Libby Barker, a Gainesville civic leader and organizer of the Smokeout effort, said Davis, Okla., residents Tom West and T.J. Clymer were stopped by a city policeman on Interstate 35. The pair were returning to Oklahoma from Dallas, but agreed to participate in the Smokeout activities. That involved being handcuf fed, put in a cart drawn by two mules and paraded with a posse escort before hundreds of spec tators, the high school band and choir. Then came dinner with the mayor, who adopted the pair as part of a Smokeout scheme to provide support for puffers trying to quit. “It worked out real good for us,” said Barker. “They were real good sports and they’re heading back to Oklahoma tonight. They say they’ll try (to quit).” In other activities in Gaines ville, shootouts using blanks were staged downtown, with smokers “shot” by the sheriff and his deputies for refusing to give up their guns and their smokes. On the town sqaure, a sign directed those so inclined to throw their cigarettes in an open coffin. But as the sun passed high noon, only four packs — one almost empty — had been depo sited in the coffin.
