United Press International HOUSTON — Two U.S. Sec ret Service officers witnessed the “cold-blooded” shooting of a doorman at a southwest Hous ton condominium Thursday, but made no efforts to arrest or stop the suspect, authorities said. “Why they didn’t intervene, I don’t know,” said one officer at the scene. Another investigator, who asked not to be identified, said the Secret Service men didn’t get a license plate number of the car that the suspect drove away in. “They can’t even tell us which state the plates are from,” he said. The gunman fired at least 11 shots, including those aimed at the Secret Service officers and other witnesses. The Secret Service officers, part of the White House security team, were in Houston making security checks before Vice Pres ident George Bush’s arrival Thursday. Bush usually stays in a hotel near the condominium where the shooting occurred. Livingood said he would wait before passing judgement on the men. “I think you would have to be at the site to know what occur red,” he said. “We’re going to investigate it. But so far, I see no wrong- doing.” Livingood said the officers were driving past the St. James Condominiums about 10:30 a.m. when a man gunned down the doorman of the high rise. The 25-year-old doorman, Gregory D. Chafin, was dead be fore help could arrive. The gunman pointed an automatic rifle at Chafin and started shooting, said homicide detective J.C. Mosier. “It was cold-blooded,” Mosier said. “He shot (Chafin) several times and then calmly walked over and pumped him with more shots as he stood over his body.” Mosier said two Secret Service officers were among several wit nesses to the shooting, but de clined further comment. “I have no idea what they could have done,” Livingood said. The officers normally carry guns, Livingood said. He said he didn’t know if they were armed at the time of the shooting. Police said both were carrying pistols. Chafin had worked as the condominium’s doorman since November 1982. Police said they had no motive or suspect in the killing.
