The written test is a manda tory part of the licensing process of the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers’ Standards and Education. Graduating cadets must cor rectly answer at least 70 percent of the 150 multiple-choice ques tions on the two-hour exam to qualify for licensing as a state- certified peace officer. Appli cants who flunk may remain officers, but must pass the test within a year. Academy Capt. Tommy Shane said 25 of the 62 Houston police cadets given the test Sept. 19 scored below 70 percent. Those cadets, now probationary officers, must attend off-duty classes at the academy on their own time so they can retake the test after the next academy class graduates. “If this test does nothing else, it will increase (law enforce ment) standards in the state,” Shane said.
