A classic? Texas-Oklahoma not all it’s cracked up to be by Donn Friedman Special to The Battalion DALLAS — There’s Army- Navy. That’s rivalry. And then there’s Oklahoma versus Texas, that’s pageantry and fanfare: Bevo in the Galler ia, the opening of the Texas State Fair, a classic football match-up. When the state fair opens each year, Dallas changes from a sophisticated gray pm-striped city to a city of orange and red confusion. Normally sedate gentlemen — graduates of THE UNIVER SITY OF TEXAS or THE UNI VERSITY OF OKLAHOMA — who work for IBM, or TRW, or Jaworski, Jaworski and Jaworski Inc., try to return to their lost college days, wearing clothes so outrageous they would never have worn them in college and supporting their teams with a fervor that has been unmatched by any society west of Sparta. The weekend formally begins Friday night as fans of both schools cruise the streets of downtown Dallas in what is bil led as the Oklahoma-Texas pep rally. Groups of intoxicated Texas fans parade up and down the street in search of Okies, while groups of intoxicated Oklahoma fans parade up and down the street in search of Longhorns. to the general area of the Cotton Bowl, the Texas Highway Patrol lien said, “I But both partisans partici pants are so intoxicated that most of the time they can’t dis- tinguish friend from foe. Periods of silence are broken with random cat calls of "OU sucks” or “beat the hell outta Texas.” Most of the time the groups seem quite sedate. Only when the camera crews appear and the film begins to roll did the fans become animated. Game day morning began zh with a parade through down town Dallas and then the dreaded trek to the Cotton Bowl. Along the highways leading erected signs which said, “Fol low these signs to state fair grounds and Cotton Bowl.” As soon as you were within striking distance of the game, however, the road split in three directions. And the signs disappeared. After traveling the junket from North Dallas Loop to the area South of the city you finally reach the destination — Fair Park. Black children line the streets hailing game-goers to park here or there for a four-dollar charge. A Dallas city ordinance requires private parking lots to charge three dollars or less. No matter. You still hear cries of “Yawanna park?,” and the front yards of tenements — con verted into parking lots — charge a four dollar parking charge. And then there’s the journey to the gates of the state fair where the gate-keepers tear your ticket, leaving you with a stub. The absence of two key players from last year’s team doesn’t seem to bother Brock, however. “I feel real good about our pitching combination this year,” he said, referring to fresnman Shawn Andaya and Yvette Lopez, a junior college transfer. “As far as pitchers go, I think we’U have the best one-two punch around in the spring.
