The recognized instrumental group for symphonic music on campus is the Texas A&M Sym phonic Band, under the direc tion of Bill J. Dean. The Symphonic Band was organized 12 years ago. Dean says the purpose of the organi zation is to offer talented stu dents who enjoy playing instru ments an opportunity to con tinue their musical interests. He says many of the players in the band were outstanding high school band members. Each semester, students may audition for membership in the 75-member group at the begin ning of each semester when some positions become vacant. Members rehearse about two hours a week and receive no academic credit for their efforts. Dean says that each year the musical quality of the band im proves. This year, auditions for Sym phonic Band were held on Sept. 6, 7, and 8. Dean says about 120 students auditioned. He also says that of the 75-member group, only about five students are Aggie Band members. He says he tries to make parti cipation as enjoyable as possible by playing a wide variety of "It's fun to work with these students because they're here because they want to be," Dean says. Each year the band enter contests and performs severa concerts. The group is planning a concert on Dec. 1 of this year in Rudder Auditorium. The Bryan Rotary Club will sponsor the event. Dean says. Greg Moulin, a junior agricul tural economics major from Dal las who is public relations officer for the band, says he enjoys par ticipating in the group because he can pursue his musical in terests "in a relaxed atmos phere." Two instrumental groups spe cializing in jazz music from the "big band" era are the Aggie land Orchestra and the Dukes of Aggieland. The director of both groups is Lt. Col. Joe Haney. The Aggieland Orchestra has 17 members. All 10 members who make up the Dukes of Aggieland are also members of the orchestra. However, Haney says the Dukes of Aggieland accept engagements when a large dance band would be in appropriate and a small one is requested. The two bands are often booked to entertain at dances, but they also play at other social events locally and out of town. Haney says the primary pur pose of the bands is "to serve Aggies." But both groups fre quently perform at the requests of organizations that are not school-sponsored. Students interested in joining 8 either the Aggieland Orchestra or the Dukes of Aggieland must be members of the Aggie Band, Haney say? Membership is by audition only. Auditions for the Aggieland Orchestra this year will be the first week in December. But Haney says that each year he ^ chooses a senior to direct the Dukes of Aggieland. Then that leader will select nine other members to be in the group. Kyle Waack, a senior pet roleum engineering major from Bellville, is currently the director of the Dukes of Aggieland. Waack has been in the group two years. Why did he join? "I love music," Waack says. Haney says members of both bands practice on their own time. They do not receive acade mic credit for their efforts. "It's something that they all enjoy doing," Haney says. "It's a pleasure to do it." He says interest in the two bands has increased over the years as both have become more and more well-known within the community.
