The play is about the events occurmg in an insane asylum. The resident psychiatrist trys to seduce a young job ap plicant, gets caught in the act and attempts to lie his way out of the predicament. He causes more trouble than he starts with. Mary Ann Mitchell, an assistant professor of English who is helping with the pro duction, says the play is a parody of extremes. The characters in the play are liter ally taking off their costumes, she says, and putting on others in their search for iden tities. The people have prob lems defining themselves, she says. There is meaning for today in the play, she says. The peo ple are faced with the ex tremes of behavior in prom iscuity, rape and incest, she says, and these are dealt with by the play. In addition they can’t make honest contact with each other, Mitchell says, or even have honest relations. There is no butler in the play. The butler, Mithchell says, is the audience, who is being shown how the cultured class falls apart. te appea l is destr normal is destroyed,” she says. “The characters are reduced to uncultured behavior; anim al instincts take over, which is not what we associate with the developed English." Members of the audience who are shocked should be, Mitchell says. “What the But ler Saw” shows society's she says, because Orton want! the audience to react and do something to correct them. The play is a simple pro duction, she says, because tie characters and their dialogue are most important. Richard Strayer plays Dr. Prentice, the seducing doctor. Elizabeth Smith plays Geral dine Barclay, who is the doc tor’s innocent victim. Anne Suite plays Mrs. Prentice, tie doctor’s nyphomaniac wife, Mark Mitchell plays Nicholas Beckett, the bellhop who tr|s to rape Mrs. Prentice. Fed Phillips plays Dr. Ranee, lie visiting psychiatrist who certi fies everyone but himself in sane. Allen Rudolph plan Sergeant Match, a slow police man who trys too haratodo his job. Nigh said a riot last month at a “model” penitentiary in Hominy, Okla., exemplified many problems common to cor rectional systems across the na tion — overcrowding, inmate idleness and the growing ten dency of judges to send more criminals to prison for longer periods of time. Although the Oklahoma^ on system had trimmed oir- crowding and had undergon major improvements over past several years, Nijjh saidik Hominy riot — in which ontt mate died and 35 inmates ml three guards were injured- occurred despite all pm lions. Nigh urged governors to it turn to their states and retitj their capabilities of respondig to a prison riot.
