It has tried to roll back the clock on equal rights for women,” he said, “and it isn’t going to work. “They’ve slashed at the safety net of programs, created to help those in our society who can’t fully help themselves,” he said, “and they even tried to punch holes in the child labor law. A four-mile march through downtown Austin culminated in speeches by state Attorney Gen eral Jim Mattox, Treasurer Ann Richards, Agriculture Secretary Jim Hightower and former U.S. Secretary of Labor Ray Mar shall. “What we see all around us are government policies which are designed to drive us all apart,” said Tom Donahue, sec retary-treasurer, AFL-CIO, “policies built on ideas of not wanting to care for one another, built on ideas that we are mean- spirited people whose national aspirations are satisfied when the rich get richer and a little bit trickles down for the rest of America.” Tony Bonilla, president of the National Hispanic Confer ence, urged a worker coalition — a “political renaissance” — to work for Reagan’s defeat next year. Hitchhiking not always a free ride United Press International NLW YORK — Hitchhiking can be a very costly “free” ride, says a security industry execu tive. Its appeal to economy- minded teenagers and young adults is far outweighed by the hidden dangers, says Edward B. Patroski, director of investiga tions for Pinkerton’s, Inc., a pri vate security and investigations firm. A recent California study shows hitchhikers are very of ten the victims of highway crimes and are actually three times more likely to be the victim than the perpetrator. At the same time, teenage and young adult drivers who have a natural tendency to give a ride to hitchhikers in their same age group are also at risk, Pat roski says. Some major dangers, he says, are: —Robbery, assault and se rious bodily harm from a psychopathic or criminal driver or rider. —Threat of blackmail or false accusation of a crime by a driver or rider. —Apprehension and fining for illegal hitchhiking or offer ing of a ride on state or federal highways. —Acceptance of a ride in a vehicle operated by an un licensed driver, or in an un licensed vehicle. —Acceptance of a ride with a driver who is drunk, ill or under the influence of illegal drugs. —Accusation of transporting a minor across state lines for im moral purposes.
