Hedgcoxe Battalion Reporter Standing only 5-foot-4-inches tall, Cabrina Tomlinson de scribes herself as “no giant.” But aside from her part-time studies, Tomlinson, 26, is a full time University police officer. Studying and being a visible law enforcer keeps her busy. “Boom, boom, boom all day long,” she says. “I’m a jack-of- all-trades, mistress of none.” Tomlinson, who has been with Texas A&M for one and a half years, was first employed as a secretary in the veterinary col lege. After six months, she transferred to the police depart ment. “An opening finally came up and I had a chance to use my associates degree in criminal jus tice,” she says. “I never expected to use my degree and 1 finally had a chance to in a reasonably calm environment. “I enjoy working for the Uni versity because I talk to real peo ple,” she says. “Once people get past the uniform, they are nice.” Tomlinson says her uniform has a psychological affect on people. She says she gets more respect in uniform but at the same time, it makes people ner vous. “As long as they look at me outside of that uniform, I’m fine. No more nervousness. They seem to accept me as a per son,” she says. She says law enforcement is her dream come true. But it does have its drawbacks. Her biggest problem is being stereotyped as tough and manly. “When I take off this uni form, I’m a lady. 1 like town dresses,” says Tomlinson. | | “And I have to keep wort separate from school,” she adds. “If I didn’t, it would be likely lepresy or something. “Your kind of off in anothtt world. Yet sometimes you cu break open into a different, separate world. It’s all psycholo gy,” she says. Tomlinson, a junior sociolo gy major, says being a student helps understand the problems and pressures that accompany classes. She says this helps hern establish a one-on-one relation ship with students. “I find myself letting people go because I’d rather be a soils than a hard nose,” she says “Especially during finals lie cause 1 know just howthey(stn dents) feel.” Floral testing garden under new leadership by Jill Slayman Battalion Reporter The Texas A&M floral test garden, formally under the con trol of the horticulture depart ment, is now headed by the grounds maintenance depart ment. Bill Vitopil, assistant grounds maintenance director, now has responsibilty for the garden. The change in responsibility of the test garden was due to a lack of personnel in the horticul ture department able to care for the variety of plants and to maintain the gardens upkeep. The physical care of the gar den is now under Debra Baker’s supervision. She and a crew of six are responsible for its day-to- day operation. The garden is also financed by the grounds maintenance de partment. The money comes from a state grounds appropria tion formula that supplies CHANELLO’S NOW HAS 2 GREAT TAMU LOCATIONS 301 PATRICIA ST. PKWY. SQ. SHOP CTR. The size of the school and its population are factors that de termine how much money it will receive. Eugene Ray, director of grounds maintenance said the department receives seed for the test garden from various people wanting to test a plant’s reaction to this part of the coun try. He said they often want to check the effects of heat. “We create a new market for some plants,” Ray said of those on display in the garden. Each plant is labeled to allow people to see if they’d like to grow it. Experiments and testing in the floral test garden began in 1968. "There are times wheni looks better than others," R* says of the test garden. The garden usually appean healthy and pretty, but at tints some sections appear witherd or unhealthy. That usually indi cates a plant new to this arcais being tested, he said. When the testing inthegai den was carried out by thehoni culture department, Dr. Artb Nightingale, a professor in tkt department served as oversm of the project. He said thedt partment was responsible for the care of the seeds and theei- periments conducted. Nightingale said the horticul ture department has no future plans to get involved with the test garden again.
