United Press International DALLAS — The sexual muti lation-slayings of seven mares — one of them pregnant — in four months time has alarmed horse owners in south Dallas County. Investigators say they are baf fled by the bizarre killings. “It’s panicking everybody down here,” said Arlene Brown, who lost a pregnant mare and filly to the mutilations. Six mares were fatally muti lated. A seventh was destroyed after being tortured. “There’s just nothing we’ve got to go on,” said Dallas police investigator E.E. Carol. Police say the perpetrators, who used pipes and tool handles to mutilate the horses, must know something about their prey in order to avoid being in jured by the large animals. Killers have struck on three separate occasions in the past four months — all of them on nights when the moon was bright — a factor that has led some residents to believe a cult might be involved, Brown said. But Carol said there was no evidence of any religious rites at the scenes of the mutilations, and he said that makes him doubt the involvement of any cult. Officials do not have a motive in the mutilations, but horse ex perts said they doubt one person was responsible. The first two took place at the same stable.
