This year’s fest is particularly intriguing be cause it will kick-off the First tour for Bowie in the United States since 1978. Bowie will be the top money maker, reportedly receiving $800,000. The Clash will follow with a reported $500,000 for their efforts. In addition to the Clash, Saturday, opening day, will fea ture such popular groups as Flock of Seagulls, Men at Work and the Stray Cats. Sunday will include heavy- metal artists Van Halen; the bat- biting Ozzy Osbourne; Judas Priest; and the Scorpions. Monday, day three, will be the big one. In addition to Bowie, pop favorite John Cougar will play, as will Stevie Nicks and the Pretenders. This will be the first major American performance for the Pretenders since the death last summer of their f uitarist, James Honeyman cott. The fest will be one of the most expensive shows in rock history. Director/producer Steve Wozniak must be worried. He says he’ll have to draw more than 800,000 people just to break even. But Pomoter Barry Fey says, “If this doesn’t sell, nothin! will.” Wozniak hopes it sells. L» year he lost an estimated $5 mi lion on the event. Andwithtte year’s ticket prices setat$20pe day, Wozniak is straddling tit fence. If a fairly large cron; shows, he’s safe, but the tide] price might scare some peoplt away. Wozniak’s budget for thefts stands at $18 million, withabom $8 million going to the jjroupi but even with that kind o! money Wozniak couldn’t the acts he wanted. The declined $2.1 million, and Bnitt Springsteen turned down million. In addition to the rockcoii cert, the festival will indude computer expositon, for whicl Wozniak also is responsible.
