The 1983 US Festival prom
ises to be thrilling, with over 30
top contemporary musicians in
cluding the Clash, Van Halen
and David Bowie. This year’s
fest is particularly intriguing be
cause it will kick-off the First tour
for Bowie in the United States
since 1978.
Bowie will be the top money
maker, reportedly receiving
$800,000. The Clash will follow
with a reported $500,000 for
their efforts.
In addition to the Clash,
Saturday, opening day, will fea
ture such popular groups as
Flock of Seagulls, Men at Work
and the Stray Cats.
Sunday will include heavy-
metal artists Van Halen; the bat-
biting Ozzy Osbourne; Judas
Priest; and the Scorpions.
Monday, day three, will be the
big one. In addition to Bowie,
pop favorite John Cougar will
play, as will Stevie Nicks and the
Pretenders. This will be the first
major American performance
for the Pretenders since the
death last summer of their
f uitarist, James Honeyman
cott.
The fest will be one of the
most expensive shows in rock
history. Director/producer
Steve Wozniak must be worried.
He says he’ll have to draw more
than 800,000 people just to
break even.
But Pomoter Barry Fey says,
“If this doesn’t sell, nothin!
will.”
Wozniak hopes it sells. L»
year he lost an estimated $5 mi
lion on the event. Andwithtte
year’s ticket prices setat$20pe
day, Wozniak is straddling tit
fence. If a fairly large cron;
shows, he’s safe, but the tide]
price might scare some peoplt
