No data has been tabulated on absenteeism or health costs at Ross S. Sterling High School, but principal Ed Wachtel said teachers seem much more opti mistic, energetic and exuberant in the classroom since enrolling in the program. Target practice seems to be the most popular activity teachers choose for stress relief, Wachtel said. “Teachers are next to test pilots as far as day to day stress is concerned,” said Wachtel, a for mer physical education teacher. “It is pretty stressful these days for educators if they really care about kids,” said Curtis Herring, assistant superinten- UAW delegates debate lc Ito est 1 injpi lyinj On dent of Baytown schoolsjegati said the teachers are faced line y students who come from jgu homes, take drugs andartpeas lected. y If But history teacher^ Mu Hunt said rifle practitfktpf helped her reduce stresss’ ad duced in the classroom, dutin “It helps with classroomem trol,” Hunt said. “Yourtjlna centrating on that targetar, la necessity forget about yoa pug ries and frustrations.” Duij The teachers use thescluni I indoor ROTC shooting med to practice shooting their, About 100 teachers are pr.rd ai paling in the target pn feM the school. iache It is “the most popular’j)rth ram, Wachtel said. “fie yboc “Instead of taking their iette trations home with them her < have a place at school toi Mm and unwind,” Wachtelsaimuce ith D ites, Stic “Ba: jhen current voting system ir'oug Garrison said he was ai P oi y small locals would not hi In voice in the election proces s 1 “one-man, one vote" system B used. “If we change the system j going to cost too much ms E time and mileage,” said & I son. “If we change, it is goh I gut the small unions. Delegates vociferously de bated an attempt by disgruntled workers to change the union’s constitution from the present convention system. In tn£ end, the union’s leadership had more than enough support to retain the old method. Currently, the union’s 26 member executive board picks a slate of candidates who are later rubber stamped by the full con vention.
