The MSC Travel and Outdoor Recreation Committees are sponsoring trips in and out of the United States. And some cadets will be on another type of summer trip — traveling to military orientation camps. The MSC Travel Committee is sponsoring two trips this sum mer. One is a two-week tour of China, and the other is a 24-day camping trip in Central Europe. Thirteen people going to Chi na will leave May 15 and visit Beijing, Xian, Shanghai, Waxi, Suzhou and Nanjing before re turning home May 27. Travel Committee adviser Theresa Chiang says the com mittee is able to provide the trips at costs considerably less than individuals can get by going through travel agencies. It does this by dealing with the All Students Federation in China, an organization similar to the MSC that is found at most universities in China. The committee also is sending 12 people to Europe this sum mer. They will leave from Hous ton on June 4 and visit Amster dam, the Swiss Alps, Munich, Rome and the French Riviera to name a few. But the people on this trip won't be staying in hotels like those going to China. They will camp out the entire time. Chiang says the original plan called for renting a bus to travel in, but not as many people signed up for the trip as were expected. So the group will rent a van instead. Chiang says that there is a slight chance that two people still could go on the European trip if they got their names on the waiting list and two people who are planning to go cancel No U.S. tours are scheduled by the Travel Committee, but the MSC Outdoor Recreation Committee has some U.S. trips planned. . The group will send nine peo- pie to the Smoky Mountains May 14 and a group of 10 to either Yellowstone or Rocky Mountain National Park Aug. Students interested in spend ing part of the summer in Yel lowstone or Rocky Moutain Na tional Park still may apply. Ap plications for the Yellowstone trip close July 1. The last day to sign up for the Rocky Mountain trip is Aug. 3. The ORC also is planning sev eral canoeing and backpacking trips. In addition to these tnps, ORC will give four free kayak roll sessions this summer. The purpose of the roll ses sion is to teach people how to get their kayak turned upright should it roll over on them. The sessions will be held at Cain Pool, and kayak and life preser vers will be provided by the out door committee. A different type of summer activity will be provided by the U.S. Armed Services to some Texas A&M students. Several students who plan to go into the military after college through the ROTC program here will attend some type of summer camp depending on what service they are entering. Mike McFadden, a sopho more electrical engineering ma jor from Montrose, Colorado, will go to Charleston Air Force Base, N.C., for Air Force camp. He will be there for four weeks, beginning July 29, learn ing about the types of jobs done by junior officers in the Air Force (first and second lieutenants) and getting acquainted with how things are done in the Air Force. About 74 cadets will attend various Air Force camps. Terry Webb, a junior mecha nized agriculture major from Pearland, will be at Fort Riley, Kansas June 8-July 20 at a sum mer camp for cadets going into the Army. The camp — similar to Army boot camp with a lot of physical training and weapon training — will be attended by 121 men and 6 women. The United States Marine Corps holds a six-week, pre commissioning camp at Quanti- co, Va., each summer for future Marine officers. The 35 Texas A&M juniors who are going have been training for the camp. The cadets will be running ob stacle, stamina and confidence courses. They will also learn ab out weapons, tactics and jobs in the Marine Corps. For their time they will receive a sergeant's pay. The cadets will be put into leadership positions within their platoons and will be rated on their performance. Freshmen who are attending Texas A&M on Navy scholar ships will be going on manda tory cruises this summer to learn about the Navy and life on a ship. Ron Coker, a secondary edu cation major from Pearland, will be going on one of these cruises. From May 20 until June 19 he will be on the aircraft carrier Midway sailing to Yokosuka, Japan.
