spokesman Bob Shaw.
He did not talk to his dis

but the department suspects he
spotted a drug transaction in
progress.
“He apparently came across a
drug deal because officers
found several syringes near the
shooting,” Shaw said.
Baker was outside his patrol
car when he was shot four times,
twice in the heart and twice in
the torso, Shaw said. The officer
was shot with a rifle, authorities
said, but his .38-caliber revolver
was missing.'
A witness said two men
jumped into a van and drove
over Baker as they escaped from
the scene. Authorities said three
or four other people were be

Police originally took four

IRVING — Loan officers at
InterFirst Bank realize people
are nervous when they ask loan

established a system in which
people can ask a machine.
“A computer is a peerless in

AUSTIN — Supporters
mandatory auto restraints for

stalled in the House.

One of the bill’s sponsors,
Sen. Carl Parker, D-Port

he was able to win passage within
about three weeks of a bill that
prptected alligators in Texas.
“It’s a shame that in a state
where we can protect alligators
in three weeks, we can’t protect
children in an entire session of
the Legislature,” he said. “The
Senate is now waiting
House.”
Parker said the proposed
law cotdd save the lives
many as 75 children in the
year.
The senator was joined
news conference by two
sponsors of the bill, Reps.
Hill, R-Garland, and
Schlueter, D-Killeen, and
health commissioner Dr.Ri
Bernstein and public safety
ctor Jim Adams.
Atlams said 80 percent(
