The families ordered out of their homes live within 3,100 feet of the Berlin 8c Farro dump a few miles west of Flint. Officials said the evacuation, which will last up to three weeks, is a precaution in case removal work mixes cyanide and hyd rochloric acid to form a poten tially deadly gas. Residents were to report to the town hall Wednesday to pick up checks covering expenses of the first days of their evacuation, which is expected to cost the state $150,000.
