SANTA ANA, Calif. — A
doctor who allegedly used his
drug-abuse clinic to prescribe
pain-killers and tranquilizers to
heroin addicts — 17 of whom
died — has been ordered to stop
practicing medicine.
Superior Court Judge Robert
Knox issued a temporary in
junction Wednesday preventing
Dr. Mark Hopp, 68, from prac
ticing medicine. (A hearing is
scheduled April 29 on whether
the injunction should be made
permanent.
The order follows an investi
gation by the State Board of
Medical Quality Assurance into
Hopp’s storefront Huntington
Beach clinic.
Officials said the clinic ca
tered to heroin addicts who were
given massive quantities of pain
killers and tranquilizers without
having to see the doctor.
“He wasn’t detoxifying them,
he was maintaining them on
drugs,” deputy district attorney
Chris Kralick said.

JUAREZ, Mexico—A rail) to
denounce the United States has
been set for Sunday In a radical
leftwing organization called the
“Comite de Defensa Popular,”
Popular Defense Committee.
Juarez police officers call it
the most radical organization in
the border city.
Members of the CDP are
mostly poor residents of squat
ter colonies whic h have sprung
up in Juarez and other border
cities.
Juarez Mayor Jose Reyes
Estrada has refused to recognize
the CDP as a legitimate political
organization and has refused to
meet with its leader, school
teacher Pedro Matus.
Reves has denounced Matus
publicly as “a leader who collects
dues from the poor and offers
no positive solutions to prob
lems of poverty.”
