They beat Baylor, 2-0, Utah’s Weber State, 6-0 and New Mexico, 3-0. In bracket play Saturday, Texas A&M stopped defending NCAA Division II champion Sam Houston State, 3-1, to adv ance to Sunday’s championship game against Utah state. Earlier Saturday, the Aggies topped New Mexico, 3-0, for the first win of the day. Texas A&M smacked eight hits, with Iva Jackson, Cindy Foster and Cooper getting two each. If, on the other hand, you’re the winless Houston Astros, it may not be enough. Sknday it wasn’t. Pittsburgh used Jason Thompson’s seventh-inning two-run homer to ease past the Astros, 10-8. The win, with Montreal’s 3-0 loss to Los Angeles Sunday, left the 5-0 Pirates the only undefe ated team in baseball. Houston’s 0-6 start is the worse in the club’s history. “It’s hard to hit home runs in the Dome,” Thompson said. “I’ve been trying to be more pa tient. I can get good contact to left field when I want to if I’m not impatient. When I get con sistent in my concentration I’ll start to be a more complete player.” Houston manager Bob Lillis said going 0-6 at home made the prospects of the club’s first road trip, with the first stop in Los Angeles, sobering. “It’s tough to go on the road after going 0-6 at home. We’re hitting good. I think we’ll do OK in Los Angeles. We just can’t get the key run or the big play or the timely hit. We’ll have to break up this pattern for sure. It’s de pressing and no one player is the problem. We all share in the los ses,” he said. The Pirates scored four runs in the fourth to cut the lead to 7-6. Thompson doubled with one out and advanced to third on a grounder by Mike Easier. Thompson scored on a double by Johnny Ray and, after Tony Pena walked, both runners scored on Dale Berra’s double down the left field line. Berra then scored on a pinch hit single by Gene Tenace. Pittsburgh tied the score 7-7 in the fifth when Lee Mazzilli walked, moved to second on an infield hit by Richie Hebner and scored on reliever Mike Mad den’s wild throw. The Pirates broke a 7-7 tie with two runs in the seventh. Af ter Mazzilli walked and was forced at second by Hebner, Thompson hit a towering hom er to left field off loser Julio Solano, 0-1. Aggies drop SWC double-headf to Red Raiders, 8-5 and 10-9 LUBBOCK — The Texas Aggies continued their losing ways Sunday against Texas Tech, losing both games of a double-header, 8-5 and 10-9. The Red Raiders bombed Aggie pitchers for 26 hits in the two games. Mark McDowell went the dis tance for Tech in the first game for his sixth win of the season against one loss. He was sup ported by a 13-hit Red Raider attack which included two home runs by Jimmy Zachry, giving him eight for the year. Sherman Corbett, 3-4, got the loss for the Aggies. Buddy Haney and Todd Edwards both homered for A&M. In the second game, Texas A&M scored seven runs in the first inning and added a run in the fourth for an 8-0 lead. Tech rallied with five runs in the fourth and three in the sixth to tie the game. Tech added one in the seventh and matched the Aggies run in the eighth. Eric Shirley, 5-2, went the dis tance for the Raiders. Phillip Taylor came on in relief in the sixth and got the loss for the Aggies. The Aggies have now lost eight straight SWC games. They are 2-9 in conference play. Rice 7, TCU 6 Scott Johnson scored on a pinch- hit single by Bobby Eggleston in the 12th inning to give the Rice Owls a 7-6 win over Texas Christian Sunday and a sweep over the Frogs for the third con secutive year.
