Another test freshmen must prepare for is campusolpgy. The cadet must learn facts about the campus and the Corps and its history. During inspections, he is questioned about Aggie tri via, upcoming football games and how many days there are until Final Review or Spring Break. Many people have never heard about some of the facts, Holmes said. For example, cadets may be asked the location of the hidden University, which is an emblem on a smokestack near the physical plant. The emblem was covered by paint several years ago. Holmes said the campusology test helps build a sense of history and pride in the campus and the Corps. Freshmen are allowed certain duties that they consider pri vileges. It’s a freshman responsi bility to keep the Lawrence Sulli van Ross statue by the Academic Building polished. It also is a freshman band member’s pri vilege to shine his class number and “BQ” on the dome of the Academic Building. Holmes said he knew about many of the traditions before he came to Texas A&M so he had a good attitude about it. “Some of the incoming fresh men didn’t know about the tra ditions and it was a difficult and challenging year,” Holmes said. “However, the freshmen do get a chance to get back at the up perclassmen eventually.” One of the ways is stealing an outfit’s commanding officer’s possessions — all of them. The outfit cleans out the officer’s room, hides his possessions and then bargains with him for pri vileges in exchange for their re turn. Holmes said as a freshman he often got back at one set showing up at the shom fore him and using hist showerhead before heem to it. He also would conft perclassmen by wearing one day and glasses then* would introduce himseli llilf § wearing glasses so uppt men would not without them. When an classman doesn’t recog I freshman he should k must introduce himself. Haddick said nowthai sophomore he is treatei better. “You’re treated likeai being when you’re a more,” he said. “Youi when you’re a freshman Few privileges coi being a sophomore, bm Blind of a sophomore is morn i n esda) »i| than that of a freshman.
