Farmers may earn more, report says United Press International WASHINGTON — Ah Agri culture Department report pre dicts farmers will be earning more for their crops next sea son, largely because of the anti cipated success of new govern ment efforts to reduce big crop surpluses. In a special report released Wednesday on agricultural supply and demand estimates, the department forecast that prices paid for farm crops in the 1983-84 marketing season will climb to the highest levels in three years. The department reasoned that since farmers have prom ised to leave 82 million acres ol cropland unplanted, this year’s harvest will be considerably smaller than last year’s, and sup plies will begin to shrink. As a result, the prices paid to farmers are expected to rise. retary John Block alnj said the impact on d prices will be minimil The report pre t l eased demand fora products as a result« pet ted improveraentt ‘cl e i and world economiei The report did not predict how retail prices would react to the crop reduction programs, which promise a combination of cash and surplus crops to far mers in exchange for leaving land idle.
