Franklin Battalion Reporter The play “Buried Child", win ner of a 1979 Pulitzer Prize, will be presented tonight and Satur day by theater arts. Mary Anne Mitchell, director of the production, said “Buried Child" tells the story of a shat tered family who has lost what binds them together. In the end, the family rediscovers those bonds. The drama is about an Illinois farm family's reaction to a shocking secret they discover. Mitchell said that the family's dark secret is an unknown child buried in their backyard. The child was killed by a member of the family. The family is symbolic of the structure of American society, Mitchell said, and the child that is buried in the family's back yard is symbolic of a willingness to accept the responsibilities of others. Mitchell said she thought the Mary Anne Mitchell director of the produc tion, said "Buried Child" tells the story of a shattered family who has lost what binds them together. In the end, the family redis covers those bonds. author of the play, Sam Shep pard, probably won his Pulitzer for plot and story development. Although the title of the play may sound depressing, Mitchell said the play itself isn't. “It's quite entertaining," she said. The theater arts section re commends that children not be allowed to view the program due to sexual overtones in the play. Also, the showing of a child's skeleton in the last scene might scare children. Cast members in "Buried Child" are not all theater arts students. Auditions were open to any student wanting to per form. "Buried Child" will be pre sented Feb. 25, 26 and March 3, 4, and 5. All performances will be held at 8 p.m. in Rudder Forum. Tick ets are $2.50 for students and $3.50 for non-students and are available at the MSC Box Office.
