Coach Charlie Thomas’ men’s team, in second place ahead of the Houston Cougars before the mile relay event, dropped the baton on the first exchange while leading the pack. As a re sult, the Cougars finished the event in second place and the meet in third place, while Texas A&M didn’t place in the event and wound up the meet in third with 61.3 points. The Arkansas Razorbacks won the men’s event with 147 points and the Cougars finished second with 63. The Lady Cougars won the women’s divi sion with 158 points and the Texas Longhorns were second with 88. Here are Texas A&M’s finishes in the weekend confer ence championships: Texas A&M men — Distance medley relay, fourth, (Bruce Lazarine, Larry Kerr, Pat Ames, Andy Elliott). School record: 10:03.14. —Jimmy Howard, first in high jump, 7-2 3 /» (meet record, breaking old mark of 7-2'/2 held by Howard, 1981 and 1982; Don Jones, A&M, 1981). NCAA meet qualifier. — Chuck Perry, second in high jump, 7-2% (ties Howard’s new record). By defeating Southwest Texas State, North Texas State and LSU to win this weekend’s Texas A&M 4-way tournament, the Aggie men’s team hiked its record to 9-1 on the season. Texas A&M, not ranked in na tional polls after finishing No. 19 last spring, had lost its first match of the season Tuesday by a score of 8-1 to fifth-ranked Trinity. The women’s team, compet ing in the University of Arkan sas Invitational Thursday through Sunday, defeated Memphis State 9-0 Thursday to move its season record to 5-0.
