It took the Aggies three-
fourths of the first half to wres
tle the lead from an inspired
Baylor bunch in Wednesday
night’s basketball contest.
And it took an extra push
from Aggie forward Claude
Riley midway through the
second half to pull Texas A&M
safely away from the Bears’ paws
and to an eventual 74-62 victory.
Riley scored 19 points and grab
bed 10 rebounds to help the
Aggies to their seventh confer
ence victory against five losses.
Baylor caught the Aggies off
guard for much of the first half,
as the Bears were able to get in
side early for some easy points.
The outside shooting of Baylor
guard Glen Mays supplemented
that inside game.
The Bears took the opening
tip and scored on a rebound
layup by 6-8 center Ozell Hall.
Forward Daryl Baucham, who
scored a game-high 21 points,
pushed the Baylor lead to 5-0
when he completed a 3-point
play set up by Jimmie Gilbert’s
futile attempt to stop Baucham’s
dunk.
Claude Riley scored 19
in A&M’s 74-62 victory
Texas A&M didn’t score until
senior forward Roy Jones found
the bottom of the net on a 27-
foot jumper with 16:24 left.
Jones cut the Baylor lead to 7-4
on Texas A&M’s next possession
with a 20-footer from the left
side.
But the Bears led until the
5:13 mark of the first half, when
Riley sank a hook shot with an
assist from Lowell McHenry.
Riley added two more to the
Aggie lead on Texas A&M’s
next possession with a short
jumper from the left side.
The Aggies’ rally began after
Coach Shelby Metcalf called
time out with 6:53 left in the
half. Trailing 22-17, Texas
A&M cut the lead to three on a
14-footer by Jones. The Bears
answered only once, on a 13-
footjumper by Mays, before the
Aggies pulled ahead. McHenry
hit a turn-around jumper from
the right side and was fouled by
Baucham in the process.
McHenry completed the 3-
pointer, cutting the Baylor lead
to 24-22. Guard Reggie Roberts
shaved the lead to a point by hit
ting the front end of a one-and-
one to set up Riley’s go-ahead
hook shot.
The Angies took a 34-28 edge
into the locker room and never
surrendered the lead. But the
Bears threatened once again in
the second half by trimming a
once-eight-point lead to 42-40
with 12:57 remaining in the
game on a Mays layup.
But the Aggies pulled away '•
once again, as Riley stretched > ;
the Aggie lead to 46-40 on 17 vj
and 16-foot jumpers. Texas *
A&M led by as many as 16 points^,
before the game’s end.
*■£>
Despite its slow start, Texas^.-;
A&M shot 58 percent from theT
field, compared to Baylor’s 45,-7
and the Aggies outreboundecf
the Bears 36-27.
Metcalf said his team’s slow
start might have been due to hisi
players’ realization that the;
Bears’ have been having a tough;
time winning.
“I think it was probably just i
the fact that things haven’t been;;
going well for Baylor lately,”;
Metcalf said. “I didn’t think we
were mentally ready to play..’
(But after) it got 42-40, L
thought the rest of the way we;
played real good.”
Gilbert, the Aggies’ freshman
center, had an off-night, hitting
only two points and collecting
just three rebounds. Whenever .
Gilbert left the lineup, th£.
