In modern society, American teen-agers are bombarded with conflicting signals about their sexuality, she said. “I feel compassionate with the teens,” Miller said. “They’re told, ‘Be sexual, but don’t have sex.’ Everything you see has a sexual connotation.” Television, movies, books, magazines and advertisements are some of the media that con tinue to tell teens to look and act sexy, she said. “Meanwhile,” she said, “pa rents are saying, ‘Don’t do it.’” The 21-year-old client said her parents discovered her younger sister’s birth control pills and took them away. “I don’t know what my sister’s doing now,” she said. A 31-year-old client and mother of two said she advocates family discussions about sex. as does the Planned Parenthood Federation. But a parental noti fication rule would not achieve that, the client said. “Communication about sex should start at home around age five or six." she said. “Parents should be taking on the responsibility of curtailing premarital sex. The govern ment shouldn’t be in the baby business.” Another client and mother of two said the rule might help family communication. “But nothing will stop pre marital sex,” the 24-year-old said. , “Minors are going to say: Tm not going to Planned Parent hood, but I’ll have sex anyway,’ and they’ll get pregnant.” Dale Marsico, director of Family Planning in Bryan, said he believes the parental notifica tion rule is “effectively dead His clinic would have tocompl if such a rule was implement# by the federal government. Marsico predicted that iflii rule were enforced, he woi see fewer minorscominginto clinic. Teen-agers who alre: have been sexually active have been taking birth coni pills would not return, he said] Marsico estimated that500(( his clients are 18 and youngi The local Planned Parent) hood clinic sees a total of 8,0 clients in a year. Miller saidtka about 800 of those are minor and 500 have received birthcot trol supplies from her clinic. $10,000 paid on delivery Surrogate enjoys her work Alterations Repairs and Custom Clothing done in my home Call Pant 693-6538.04(19 United Press International WASHINGTON — Susan works 24 hours a day, seven days a week, nine months at a time. Blankfeld’s program has 1 1 women like Susan under con tract. All .must remain anony mous, and Susan’s real name cannot be revealed here. The women agree to be artifi cially inseminated, carry a baby for nine months and then sur render it to a childless couple for $10,000 — cash on delivery. “The money is more or less by the side,” Susan said. “No amount of money is going to motivate you to really honestly want to do this.” Couples pay $25,000 for the center’s 1 comprehensive service. Blankfeld,<said the couples, who • hav*C&pent yeaTs trying to-fill the cradle, voice little opposition to the steep fee. The center insists couples ex plore all other alternatives be fore they consider surrogate parenting. The couples accepted are those where the wile cannot biologically con ceive; the husband’s sperm is used for the artif icial insemina tions. It took six months of artificial inseminations before Susan be came a full-fledged surrogate. “I didn’t really worry that I wasn’t going to be able to con ceive because I had no problem getting pregnant with my son,” Susan said. “It’s a lol.easier when it’s hot through artificial insemi- natioh.” “In a way (surrogate parent ing) is like being an extension of the woman’s body,” Susan said. “I’m doing her a favor by shar ing my maternal abilities.” Blankfeld said many clients begin making additions to their home and selecting new furni ture before the surrogate’s pre- ganancy has been confirmed. “I feel like I’m going to be able to give the gift of life to some one,” Susan said. “Nobody else is going to do that for these people.” And motherhood so agrees with Susan that she plans to nave two or three more children for the same couple. Susan was a dental hygienist before she became a profession al mother. She first considered the idea of becoming a surrogate child bearer after watching a television program dealing with the subject. Her husband, a laboratory technician, supports her deci sion, but did not encourage it. “It’s one thing to ask her to have a child for lis,” he said, “but to say, ‘Hey, could you have a ‘ child for someone else?’ That’s nothing I should ask. That’s something she should decide on her on.” Like the center’s other surro gate mothers, Susan contacted Blankfeld, who says she solicits neither surrogates nor childless couples, but has been over whelmed with calls from couples and from women seeking to be surrogates. The center provides psycho logical, medical 711101 legal coun seling. Blankfeld conclucts ex tensive interviews with the sur rogate and her husband before business is discussed. Few reach the contract stage, and fewer than 3 percent of the surrogate applicants are accepted. In the interviews, Blankfeld tries to find out why the woman and her husband want to be come surrogate parents. Such gaffes as, “My wife can’t type, can’t sell, but boy can she make babies,” send couples out the door. “There is nothing worsetl going to a job everyday thatjt hate, and this is a full-timeji and a 24-hour-a-day Blankfeld said. “Can you i agine the emotional pressures living with your commiti when everyone around yon opposed to what you aredoii To ensure the commitu the center’s surrogate modi must sign a 27-page contra agreeing to surrender the I: once it is born. “I know that once thebabi delivered those first couple! days are probably going to: pretty rough emotional dan Susan said. “On the one I you have had this physic attachment and on the oth hand you know why you i doing it.” After the birth of thei Susan will remain under met al and psychological supen sion. Legislation lags behind I nation’s interest in surrop parenting. Only five statesh taws on the subject. Blankfeld concedes thatasu rogate mother who refused 1 surrender her baby wouldpre ably win in court. “If you have good qualitysn rogates, and you take card them the way you are sup to, you have a successful pn) ram,” Blankfeld said. “Ft someone to dabble in sur parenting and blatantly use s« rogates and then discard then something that makes mes there has got to be legislatit governing surrogate parenlii organizations so that does! happen.” I f the child should becomeo rious about his natural motlie he would have access to theo ter’s files, including the motk picture. Once the child 1 a legal age, he could learnll surrogate mother’s name i address. CHECK THE I a LOST Reward for the return of iny British tweed cap..
