Four starters, led by Clyde Vaughan’s 24 points, scored in double figures to give Pitt sburgh its third straight Big East Conference upset, an 85-74 de cision over 16th-ranked Syra cuse. Pitt, which got off to a slow start this season, including a 19- point loss to Syracuse, upset then fourth-ranked St.John’s at home last Tuesday and was a surprise overtime winner at Connecticut Saturday night. With Monday night’s triumph, the Panthers raised their record to 12-8 and 5-5 in the league. “It was a great team effort,” said Pitt Coach Roy Chipman. “It’s kind of nice to be 5-5 in the league, especially the way we started out.” Billy Culbertson scored 17 points for Pitt, George Allen 14 and Trent Johnson 11. Syracuse, 15-5 and 6-4, took a 4-0 lead, but Pitt came back to go ahead, 5-4, with 16:11 left in the first half and stayed in the the lead after that. The Orangemen, paced by Leo Rautins’ 24 points, man aged to tie the game three times in the second half, but could never get a go-ahead basket. A total of eight players fouled out of the hard-fought game, in cluding four Syracuse starters. Erich Santifer had 20 points for Syracuse and teammate Tony Bruin added 13. In other games involving ranked teams, No. 9 Arkansas downed Baylor, 81-66, No. 10 Memphis State defeated Wichita State, 85-73, No. 11 Louisville toppled Florida State, 89-63, Mississippi upset No. 19 Geor gia, 76-59, and No. 20 Tennes see beat Louisiana State, 66-63. At Memphis, Tenn., Andre Turner and Bobby Parks scored 22 points each to power Mem phis State. At Louisville, Ky., Carlton McCray, who celebrates his 21st birthday today, had 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists to spark Louisville to a Metro Con ference victory. At Athens, Ga., Carlos Clark scored 16 of his game-high 23 points in the first half to boost Mississippi to its upset. At Knoxville, Tenn., Dan Federmann scored 20 points, in cluding a clutch free throw with 14 seconds remaining, to help Tennessee to a share of the SEC lead. And in local basketball, Uni versity of Texas-San Antonio center Rick Doyle scored a career-high 20 points and added 10 rebounds as he led the Road- runners to a 50-45 victory over the Oklahoma City Chiefs. UTSA took a 26-22 halftime lead and then battled off a Chief rally late in the second half to notch their eighth triumph the season. UTSA improved to 8-12 on the year while Oklahoma City dropped its 11th straight and fell to 3-16. Derrick Gervin backed Doyle with 10 points for UTSA and Jones Richmond and Ronnie Fa!ggins had nine each for the Chiefs.
