If Bryan-College Station made several sites avail able for examination, other companies would surely locate here, she said. Westinghouse considers labor, potential plant site and community conditions when selecting a new location, Haines said. Before the company de cided to locate here, local businesses were polled about their job turn-over and rates of absenteeism. Target employment for a Westinghouse plant is between 300 and 1,000 persons. The plant will create about 400 jobs, Haines said. The working Force at a Westinghouse plant cannot exceed 5 percent of the popula tion, or 20 percent of the eligible work force. In addition, potential plant sites must be at least 50 acres in size or five times larger than the plant floor area, whichever is larger. They should be located on or near a major highway; ac cess to a railroad is desireable, but not required. T he community also must be able to provide adeciuatc public utilities to support the plant, as well as have available housing of all sizes and tvpes. Fishfarming — the raising of fish for private or commercial uses — has become increasingly popular since the 1960s says Ken Johnson, an Agriculture Extension Service agent and host of this year’s convention. “This year’s session has been ex tremely successful because of a good turnout,’’Johnson said. He estimated that around 250 farmers from 10 states were at the three-day conference that concludes today. Johnson said the conference serves to update fish farmers on the latest research, much of which is conducted at Texas A&M. But some of those who were in attendance, such as David Gann, owner of the largest pri vate trout farm in Colorado, also are looking for winter sales. “In Colorado, recreational fishing takes place only 6 months out of the year, so 1 came down here to find a mar ket for my trout,” Gann said. He said that even though trout are a cold-water fish, they cannot withstand the sub-zero temperatures of Colorado dur ing the winter. But he said he hopes his trout will fare better iu the somewhat mild winter cli mate of Texas. Others, such as Jim Kahrs remove from Osage Beach,V the conference toexi fish breeds.
